Réunion
Réunion (; french: La Réunion, ; previously ''Île Bourbon''; rcf, label= Reunionese Creole, La Rényon) is an island in the Indian Ocean that is an overseas department and region of France. It is located approximately east of the island of Madagascar and southwest of the island of Mauritius. , it had a population of 868,846. Like the other four overseas departments, Réunion also holds the status of a region of France, and is an integral part of the French Republic. Réunion is an outermost region of the European Union and is part of the eurozone. Réunion and the fellow French overseas department of Mayotte are the only eurozone regions located in the Southern Hemisphere. As in the rest of France, the official language of Réunion is French. Margie Sudre (born 17 October 1943) is a Vietnamese-born Reunionese politician and Member of the European Parliament for France's "''Outre-mer''". Roland Garros (aviator)
Eugène Adrien Roland Georges Garros (; 6 October 1888 – 5 October 1918) was a French aviation pioneer and fighter pilot. Garros began a career in aviation in 1909 and performed many early feats before joining the French army and becoming one of the earliest fighter pilots during World War I. In 1928, the Roland Garros tennis stadium was named in his memory; the French Open tennis tournament takes the name of Roland Garros as well as the stadium in which it is held. Joseph Bédier
Joseph Bédier (28 January 1864 – 29 August 1938) was a French writer and scholar and historian of medieval France. Biography Bédier was born in Paris, France, to Adolphe Bédier, a lawyer of Breton origin, and spent his childhood in Réunion. He was a professor of medieval French literature at the Université de Fribourg, Switzerland (1889–1891) and the Collège de France, Paris (c. 1893). Modern theories of the ''fabliaux'' and the ''chansons de geste'' are based on two of Bédier's studies. Bédier revived interest in several important old French texts, including '' Le roman de Tristan et Iseut'' (1900), ''La chanson de Roland'' (1921), and '' Les fabliaux'' (1893). He was a member of the Académie française from 1920 until his death. His ''Tristan et Iseut'' was translated into Cornish by A. S. D. Gilbert Guillaume Marie-Jean Aubry (born 10 May 1942 in Saint-Louis, Réunion) is the Réunionnais bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Saint-Denis-de-La Réunion, as well as a poet and a singer. Aubry has served as the bishop of the diocese, which is based in the city of Saint-Denis, Réunion, since his episcopal consecration on May 2, 1976. Edmond Albius
Edmond Albius (1829 – 9 August 1880) was a horticulturalist from Réunion. Born into slavery, Albius became an important figure in the cultivation of vanilla. At the age of 12, he invented a technique for pollinating vanilla orchids quickly and profitably. Albius's technique revolutionized the cultivation of vanilla and made it possible to profitably grow vanilla beans away from their native Mexico. Early life Albius was born in St. Suzanne, Réunion. His mother, a slave, died during his birth. The colonist keeping Edmond in slavery was Féréol Bellier Beaumont. Vanilla pollination French colonists brought vanilla beans to Réunion and nearby Mauritius in the 1820s with the hope of starting production there. was a Japanese-American professor of Geophysics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and then at the University of Southern California (USC), seismologist, author and mentor. He and Paul G. Richards coauthored "Quantitative Seismology: theory and methods". Biography Aki was born in Yokohama, Japan. Jean-Régis Ramsamy was born in Saint-André in Reunion Island (France), on April 16, 1966. He now is a reporter, historian and a writer. He was an anchorman on RFO (lately :fr:Réunion 1re (télévision)). Background He is the son of ''Antonin Ramsamy'' and of ''Norma Sévingué''. Biography Yves Manglou grew up on the French island of Réunion at a time when traditional storytelling was still very popular. Réunion was still a French colony and the abolition of slavery had occurred less than a century before. Brought up as one of nine children under the watchful eye of his school teacher father and stay-at-home mother, Manglou enjoyed much freedom exploring the banks of the Saint-Jean river, often going barefoot and shirtless.
