Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn (, ; 15 July 1606 – 4 October 1669), usually simply known as Rembrandt, was a Dutch Golden Age painter, printmaker and draughtsman. The Italian Renaissance ( it, Rinascimento ) was a period in Italian history covering the 15th and 16th centuries. The period is known for the initial development of the broader Renaissance culture that spread across Europe and marked the transition from the Middle Ages to modernity. Cornelis Hofstede De Groot
Cornelis Hofstede de Groot (9 November 1863 – 14 April 1930), was a Dutch art collector, art historian and museum curator. Life He was born in Dwingeloo and spent some time in Switzerland in his youth due to weak lungs, where he learned German. He became the first academically schooled art historian of the Netherlands, receiving his training in Leipzig, which is why much of his work was published in German, most notably his lengthy 10-part ''Beschreibendes kritisches Verzeichnis der Werke der hervorragendsten Holländischen Mahler des XVII. Jahrhunderts'' (1907–28), also known as a rewrite of John Smith's ''catalogue raisonné'' (9 vols.; 1829–42, London). Wilhelm Von Bode
Wilhelm von Bode (10 December 1845 – 1 March 1929) was a German art historian and museum curator. Born Arnold Wilhelm Bode in Calvörde, he was ennobled in 1913. He was the creator and first curator of the Kaiser Friedrich Museum, now called the Bode Museum in his honor, in 1904. Career Bode studied law at the Universities of Göttingen and Berlin, but took an interest in art during his university years. While practicing law in Braunschweig he systematically rearranged the ducal art collections, and visited a number of museums and private collections in Belgium, the Netherlands, and Italy. After studies in art history in Berlin and Vienna, he received his doctorate from the University of Leipzig in 1870 based on his dissertation ''Frans Hals und seine Schule''. Wolfgang Ferdinand Ernst Günther Stechow (5 June 1896 Kiel – 12 October 1974 Princeton, New Jersey) was a German American art historian. Life He was the son of Prussian prosecutor Waldemar Stechow and the concert singer Bertha Deutschmann. He attended the in Göttingen until 1913 and then volunteered in 1914. He was captured in Russia, in 1915 and spent two years in a Siberian camp. He earned a Ph.D. in 1921, from the University of Göttingen. He was an assistant in the Kaiser Friedrich Museum, under Wilhelm von Bode, from 1921 to 1922. In The Hague, he was assistant to Cornelis Hofstede de Groot, from 1922 to 1924. He then moved in 1923 to the Art History Department, University of Göttingen. There he became a lecturer in 1926, after his postdoctoral appointment of Dutch art, from 1931 to associate professor. Jan Białostocki
Jan Białostocki (Polish: ; August 14, 1921, in Saratov, Russia – December 25, 1988, in Warsaw) was a Polish historian. He is considered to be one of the most renowned Polish art historians of the 20th century. Life and work During the German Occupation of Poland (1939–45), Białostocki studied at the so-called "Secret University of Warsaw" philosophy and art history under Wladyslaw Tatarkiewicz, Tadeusz Kotarbiński and Michał Walicki. From September 1944 to May 1945 he was a prisoner in several German concentration camps. After World War II he worked for about ten years as an assistant at the National Museum, Warsaw and from 1956 on, he directed the museum's art gallery.
