Film Directors
A film director controls a film's artistic and dramatic aspects and visualizes the screenplay (or script) while guiding the film crew and actors in the fulfilment of that vision. The director has a key role in choosing the cast members, production design and all the creative aspects of filmmaking. The film director gives direction to the cast and crew and creates an overall vision through which a film eventually becomes realized or noticed. Directors need to be able to mediate differences in creative visions and stay within the budget. There are many pathways to becoming a film director. Some film directors started as screenwriters, cinematographers, producers, film editors or actors. Other film directors have attended a film school. Directors use different approaches. Fernando Lopes (filmmaker)
Fernando Lopes, GCIH (28 December 1935 – 2 May 2012) was a Portuguese film director. He was a Film teacher at the Portuguese National Conservatory, nowadays the Lisbon Theatre and Film School (Escola Superior de Teatro e Cinema). He died, aged 76, in Lisbon due to throat cancer. Jorge Brum Do Canto
Jorge Brum do Canto (10 February 1910 – 7 February 1994) was a Portuguese film director and actor. His career spanned over a half-century, from 1929 to 1984. Biography Jorge Brum do Canto was born in Lisbon into a family with aristocratic Flemish and English roots. He attended high school and enrolled in the University of Lisbon School of Law, but did not finish his degree. Brum do Canto wrote about film; in 1925 he took his first acting role, a part in Rino Lupo's film ''O Desconhecido''. From 1927 to 1929, Brum do Canto wrote for the newspaper ''O Século''. Meanwhile, he edited and/or collaborated on several cinema magazines flourishing at the time (''Cinéfilo'', ''Kino'' and ''Imagem''). Interested in the French vanguard, he followed their lead as a director in his first film (''A Dança dos Paroxismos''), shot at the end of 1929. Joaquim Sapinho
Joaquim Sapinho (born 1965 at Sabugal, Portugal) is a Portuguese film director. Founder of production company Rosa Filmes, he is considered to be part of ''The School of Reis'' film family. Career Joaquim Sapinho was a student at the Portuguese National Film School (Escola Superior de Teatro e Cinema), where he was a student of António Reis, Paulo Rocha (film director), Paulo Rocha and Alberto Seixas Santos, and where he is nowadays a professor of directing for cinema. He started as a documentarist for television, before directing his first feature. In 1995, with his first picture, ''Haircut (film), Haircut'', he gave us a rare glimpse of the Portuguese youth of the 90's, being nominated for the Golden Leopard at the Locarno Film Festival. João Salaviza (born João Salaviza Manso Feldman da Silva; 19 February 1984) is a Portuguese film director, screenwriter, editor, producer, and former actor. He is the recipient of several accolades, including the Short Film Golden Bear, the Short Film Palme d'Or, and the Un Certain Regard. Biography João Salaviza was born on 19 February 1984, in Lisbon, Portugal. His father is José Edgar Feldman, a film director, and his mother is a producer. João Pedro Rodrigues (born 24 August 1966) is a Portuguese film director. He is considered to be part of ''The School of Reis'' film family. Career Having studied at the School of Theatre and Cinema of Portugal, Rodrigues started his career as an assistant director and editor in several features, directed, for example, by Alberto Seixas Santos and Teresa Villaverde, among others. In 1997 Rodrigues directed his first film. ''O Fantasma (Phantom)'' (2000). Apart from the minor controversy it generated in Portugal, the film was shown in Spain, Italy, France, Brazil and the United States with modest results. João Mário Lourenço Bagão Grilo (born 8 November 1958) is a Portugal, Portuguese film director, author and professor, born in Figueira da Foz. He attended economics at the University of Coimbra but dropped out. In 1983, he graduated in sociology at Lisbon's ISCTE and in 1994 earned a Ph.D. in communication sciences from the NOVA University Lisbon. He is a full professor in the Department of Communication Studies at the NOVA University Lisbon, where, among other courses, he teaches Filmology and Film Direction. João César Monteiro
João César Monteiro Santos (2 February 1939, in Figueira da Foz – 3 February 2003, in Lisbon) was a Portuguese film director, actor, writer and film critic. Life and career João César Monteiro was born into a family with anti-clerical and anti-fascist ideals. His family moved to Lisbon when Monteiro was 15 years old to enable him to continue his studies. In 1963, with a grant from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Monteiro traveled to Great Britain to study at the London Film School (known then as the London School of Film Technique). In 1965 in Portugal, he began work on his first film, '' Quem Espera por Sapatos de Defunto Morre Descalço'' (Who Waits for the Deceased's Shoes Dies Barefoot), which would not be finished for five years due to financial problems.
