Lewistown Station
Lewistown station is an Amtrak railway station located about 60 miles northwest of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania at PA 103 and Helen Street in Lewistown, Mifflin County, Pennsylvania. The station is actually located across the Juniata River from Lewistown proper, a little less than one mile south of the center of the borough. It is currently only served by Amtrak's '' Pennsylvanian'', which operates once per day in each direction, though until 2005, Lewistown was served by a second daily train, the '' Three Rivers'' (a replacement service for the legendary ''Broadway Limited''), an extended version of the ''Pennsylvanian'' that terminated in Chicago. Upon its cancellation, the sole ''Pennsylvanian'' marked the first time in Lewistown's railway history that the town was served by just a single, daily passenger train. Main Line Of Public Works
The Main Line of Public Works was a package of legislation passed by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 1826 to establish a means of transporting freight between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. It funded the construction of various long-proposed canal and road projects, mostly in southern Pennsylvania, that became a canal system and later added railroads. Built between 1826 and 1834, it established the Pennsylvania Canal System and the Allegheny Portage Railroad. Later amendments substituted a new technology, railroads, in place of the planned but costly canal connecting the Delaware River (Philadelphia) to the Susquehanna River. Historic background Trans-Appalachian settlement had begun in earnest during the latter years of the French and Indian War (1754-1763). Mifflin County is a county in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. As of the 2020 census, the population was 46,143. Its county seat is Lewistown. The county was created on September 19, 1789, from parts of Cumberland County and Northumberland County. It was named for Thomas Mifflin, the first Governor of Pennsylvania. Mifflin County comprises the Lewistown, PA Micropolitan Statistical Area. Geography The county terrain is formed by the folded Appalachian Mountain ridges which run from southwest to northeast across the county. The terrain slopes to the northeast, with its highest point (Broad Mtn) 1.25 mile (2 km) East Northeast from the county's Northwest corner, just south of the county's border with Centre County.
