List Of Parliamentary Constituencies In Cornwall
The ceremonial county of Cornwall, which includes the Isles of Scilly, is divided into six parliamentary constituencies. They are all county constituencies. Parliamentary history of Cornwall All six parliamentary seats are currently held by Conservatives, having came from holding no seats in 1997, 2001 and 2005, to gaining three of the six from the Liberal Democrats in 2010, to gaining the remaining three to hold all six Cornish seats in 2015. All six MPs were re-elected in 2017. In that election, several previous Liberal Democrat candidates, including previous MPs Andrew George and Steve Gilbert re-stood in their old seats, but failed to be re-elected. In all six seats, the Labour vote surged, pushing the Liberals into third place in four of the six seats. In the 2019 election, Labour retained their position as the second-placed party in most of the Cornish seats, holding their vote up far better in the region than elsewhere in the country. Falmouth and Camborne was, from 1950 until 2010, a county constituency represented in the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. It elected one Member of Parliament (MP) by the first past the post system of election. History The Falmouth and Camborne seat was created in 1950, succeeding the former Camborne constituency. The seat had an industrial tradition, mostly in tin mining. The seat alternated between the Labour and Conservative parties until 2005, when it was won by Julia Goldsworthy of the Liberal Democrats. Sheryll Murray
Sheryll Murray (formerly Sheryll Hickman; born 4 February 1956) is a British Conservative Party politician and former receptionist. She was first elected as the Member of Parliament (MP) for South East Cornwall at the 2010 general election. Early life Sheryll Murray was born on 4 February 1956 in the village of Millbrook, Cornwall, to Cornish parents, her mother's family lived at Millbrook and her father's family originated from the village of Calstock. She was state educated at Millbrook Primary and Torpoint Community College. Murray left the latter at the age of 16 with 5 O-Levels and worked for the South Western Electricity Board. She then worked for an insurance underwriter and later as a medical receptionist at a GP surgery. She served as a Governor of Torpoint School for nine years until 2008, before standing down to concentrate on campaigning for the forthcoming general election. South East Cornwall is a constituency represented in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament since 2010 by Sheryll Murray, a Conservative. Scott Leslie Mann (born 24 June 1977) is a British Conservative politician and has been the Member of Parliament (MP) for North Cornwall since 2015. He currently serves as a Government Whip (Lord Commissioner of the Treasury). He served as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Growth and Rural Affairs from September to October 2022. North Cornwall is a constituency represented in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament by Scott Mann, a Conservative since the 2015 general election. Like all British constituencies, the seat elects one Member of Parliament (MP) by the first past the post system of election at least every five years. The seat was created in 1918. Since 1950, the constituency has been held by MPs from either the Conservative Party or the Liberal Democrats (including the party's predecessor, the Liberal Party). Penwith
Penwith (; kw, Pennwydh) is an area of Cornwall, England, United Kingdom, located on the peninsula of the same name. It is also the name of a former local government district, whose council was based in Penzance. The area is named after one of the ancient administrative hundreds of Cornwall which derives from two Cornish words, ''penn'' meaning 'headland' and ''wydh'' meaning 'at the end'. Natural England have designated the peninsula as national character area 156 and named it West Penwith. It is also known as the Land's End Peninsula. Geography The Penwith peninsula sits predominantly on granite bedrock that has led to the formation of a rugged coastline with many fine beaches. Kerrier ( kw, Keryer) was a local government district in Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. It was the most southerly district in the United Kingdom, other than the Isles of Scilly. Its council was based in Camborne (). Other towns in the district included Redruth and Helston. The district also contained the Lizard Peninsula. ''Kerrier'' is named after one of the ancient administrative Hundreds of Cornwall, Kerrier, which covered broadly the same area, but did not have a coast on the north. Carrick ( kw, Karrek) was a local government district in Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. Its council was based in Truro. The main centres of population, industry and commerce were the city of Truro and the towns of Falmouth/ Penryn. The district was created under the Local Government Act 1972, on 1 April 1974 by the merger of the municipal boroughs of Truro, Falmouth and Penryn, and the Truro Rural District. It was named after the Carrick Roads, an inlet near Falmouth that the rivers Percuil, Penryn and Fal drain into.
