Diving is the sport of jumping or falling into water from a platform or springboard, usually while performing acrobatics. Diving is an internationally recognized sport that is part of the Olympic Games. In addition, unstructured and non-competitive diving is a recreational pastime. Competitors possess many of the same characteristics as gymnasts and dancers, including strength, flexibility, kinaesthetic judgment and air awareness. Some professional divers were originally gymnasts or dancers as both the sports have similar characteristics to diving. Marshall Wayne
Marshall Wayne (May 25, 1912 – June 16, 1999) was an American diver who competed in the 1936 Summer Olympics. In the 1936 Berlin Olympics, he won the gold medal in the 10 meter platform competition as well as the silver medal in the 3 meter springboard event. After the war he was an exhibition diver for Billy Rose's Aquacades. He was the Commanding officer of Lockheed P-38 Lightnings in World War II for the 7th Photo Reconnaissance Squadron, and in 1945 he aborted his de Havilland Mosquito plane and landed in Italy. After the war he was a pilot, navigator and captain for PanAm Airlines. He was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fall in 1982, in Fort Lauderdale, FLorida. Born of parents in the Vaudeville troupe that toured the east coast of the US, Marshall began performing at a very young age. Frank Kurtz
Colonel Frank Allen Kurtz Jr. (September 9, 1911 – October 31, 1996) was an American Olympic diver and an aviator in the United States Army Air Forces. Life and career Kurtz was born in Davenport, Iowa, the third child of Dora Lee (née Fenton) and Frank Allen Kurtz, Sr., an insurance salesman. He grew up in Kansas City, Missouri. Kurtz became interested in flying at age 16, and in 1935 flew an open cockpit plane, setting a speed record flight from Los Angeles to Mexico City to Washington, D.C. and back to Los Angeles. Kurtz's diving abilities impressed Olympic champion swimmer Johnny Weissmuller, who encouraged him to train with famous coach Clyde Swendsen. Kurtz graduated from Hollywood High School and went on to the University of Southern California especially to join the diving team. Harold Smith (diver)
Edwin Harold Smith (February 19, 1909 – March 5, 1958) was an American diver who competed at the 1928 and 1932 Summer Olympics. In 1928, he finished fourth in the 3m springboard. Four years later in the 1932 Summer Olympics, he won the gold medal in the 10m platform and a silver in the 3m springboard. Domestically, he won the AAU springboard titles in the 1m in 1928 and 1930; and in the 3m in 1930 and 1931. After the 1932 Olympics, he became a professional show diver, and a diving coach at New York Athletic Club and Yale University. He also prepared the German diving team to the 1936 Summer Olympics. During World War II, he served as a captain in the United States Marine Corps. After the war, he worked as a pool manager at luxury hotels in Palm Springs and Santa Barbara. He died at age 49 of cancer. Michael Galitzen
Michael Riley Galitzen, also known as Mickey Riley (September 6, 1909, Los Angeles, California – June 6, 1959, Hollywood, California) was an American diver who won four total medals, one gold, at the 1928 Summer Olympics and 1932 Summer Olympics. Galitzen won acclaim both for his individual diving and as a tandem diver with his brother John. He won two medals in diving at Amsterdam in 1928 as Michael Galitzen. In 1931 his coach suggested that the brothers use Americanized stage names — "Mickey Riley" and "Johnny Riley". He won gold and silver medals in Los Angeles in 1932 under that name. After the Olympics, he worked as a film editor, and he and John appeared frequently in diving shows. He was found dead in his Hollywood apartment in 1959; the death was attributed to natural causes. Farid Simaika
Farid Simaika ( ar, فريد سميكة 12 June 1907 – 11 September 1943) was an Olympic diver who competed for Egypt. Early life Simaika was born on 12 June 1907 in Alexandria to one of the oldest Coptic families which can trace their ancestry to the middle of the 17th Century. The Simaikas were mostly magistrates and notables who prospered in the service of State and Church. His father, Bassili Bey Simaika, was director of Alexandria customs. Before moving to the United States in the 1920s, Simaika was already a well-known Egyptian diving champion. He also held an Egyptian pilot's license. Diving titles In 1927 and representing the Ambassador Swimming Club of Los Angeles, Simaika won the American Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) low board championship and came in second place to Pete Desjardins in the American national fancy high diving competition. Pete Desjardins
Ulise Joseph "Pete" Desjardins (April 12, 1907 – May 6, 1985) was an American diver who competed in the 1924 and 1928 Summer Olympics. Born in St-Pierre-Jolys, Manitoba, Canada, Desjardins grew up in Florida. In 1924 he won the silver medal in the 3 m springboard competition and finished sixth in the plain high diving event. Four years later, he won gold medals in the 3 meter springboard and 10 meter platform. At the 1928 Games Desjardins had the maximum score for two of his springboard dives, but his platform gold medal was unexpected. Farid Simaika from Egypt initially won the competition, and the Egyptian anthem was already being played at the award ceremony, when the judges reconsidered their scoring and placed Desjardins first.
