Oklahoma State Penitentiary
The Oklahoma State Penitentiary, nicknamed "Big Mac", is a prison of the Oklahoma Department of Corrections located in McAlester, Oklahoma, on . Opened in 1908 with 50 inmates in makeshift facilities, today the prison holds more than 750 male offenders, the vast majority of which are maximum-security inmates. Construction and early years Before Oklahoma became a state in 1907, felons convicted in Oklahoma Territory and Indian Territory were sent to the Kansas State Penitentiary in Lansing, Kansas. At statehood, Kate Barnard became Oklahoma Commissioner of Charities and Corrections. During the summer of 1908, Barnard arrived unannounced at the Kansas prison to investigate widespread complaints she had received about mistreatment of Oklahoma inmates. She took a regular tour with other visitors first, then identified herself to prison officials and asked that she be allowed to conduct an inspection of the facility. Cimarron Correctional Facility
Cimarron Correctional Facility is a medium security prison in unincorporated Payne County, Oklahoma, located southwest of the city of Cushing. It is owned and operated by CoreCivic, formerly Corrections Corporation of America, under contract with the United States Marshals Service. The prison was built in 1997, and has a "contracted capacity" for 1650 inmates. Currently, of that number, 1,470 are medium-security and 180 are maximum-security beds. CCA has also imported prisoners for detention here. In March 2012, the Puerto Rico Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation agreed to send as many as 480 inmates to Cimarron, to alleviate overcrowded prisons on the island. The three-year contract was ended prematurely in June 2013 after unit-wide fights and "disruptive events", and the inmates were sent back to Puerto Rico. North Fork Correctional Facility
North Fork Correctional Center is a medium to maximum security correctional facility for men located east of Sayre, Beckham County, Oklahoma. From its opening in 1998 through 2015, the prison was owned and operated by Corrections Corporation of America. From 2006 - 2015, the prison housed prisoners from the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, as part of an effort to relieve California prison overcrowding. After a year of closure starting in 2015, the facility was reopened under lease and has been operated by the Oklahoma Department of Corrections. It is from downtown Sayre.
