New Zealand National Netball Team
The New Zealand national netball team, commonly known as the Silver Ferns, represent New Zealand in international netball. The team take their nickname from the Silver Tree Fern (''Cyathea dealbata''), which is an emblem for many New Zealand sports teams. The Silver Ferns were formed in 1938 as a representative New Zealand team to tour Australia. To date, they have been one of the most dominant national netball teams in the world, along with Australia, and have a winning record against most other netball nations. The Silver Ferns are current world champions and ranked second in the INF World Rankings, behind Australia. The Silver Ferns compete annually for the Constellation Cup; a home-and-away test series with Australia, and also play test matches with other major netball countries, including England and Jamaica, on a regular basis. The 1963 World Netball Championships was the first edition of the INF Netball World Cup, a quadrennial international netball competition. It was held from 2 August to 14 August and in Eastbourne, England. It featured 11 teams. In a round robin style format, Australia won all of their matches and considered the inaugural title holders. Tracey Fear
Tracey Fear (born 1959) was an Australian-born netball player who played 63 times for New Zealand. In 1999 she was chosen as a member of New Zealand's "Team of the Century". She later worked for Netball New Zealand and was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2018. Early life Tracey Fear was born in Maroochydore in the Sunshine Coast Region, of Queensland, Australia on 19 August 1959. Her mother played netball at state level in Australia, while her father played Australian rules football. She moved to New Zealand in 1974 when her father was posted to the Australian High Commission in New Zealand's capital, Wellington. Netball career Fear played her first game for the ''Silver Ferns'', the New Zealand national netball team, against Australia on 10 July 1982. The 1987 World Netball Championships was the seventh edition of the INF Netball World Cup held in Glasgow, Scotland. This quadrennial premier event in international netball featured 17 teams, and included the debut of Cook Islands. Leigh Gibbs
Leigh Helen Gibbs (, born 1956) is a New Zealand retired netball player who played for the national team on 61 occasions and was captain for the 1987 World Netball Championships when New Zealand won the gold medal. She was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit (ONZM) in 2001. Early life Leigh Helen Gibbs (née Mills) was born in Gisborne, New Zealand on 17 July 1956. She was educated at Lytton High School in Gisborne. She obtained a diploma in physical education at the University of Otago, following this with a one-year course to obtain an education diploma at the Christchurch College of Education. Netball career Gibbs represented Otago in netball from 1974 to 1976 and Canterbury from 1977 to 1986. The 1983 World Netball Championships was the sixth edition of the INF Netball World Cup, a quadrennial premier event in international netball. Lyn Gunson
Lyn Gunson (born 31 December 1953), also known as Lyn Parker, is a former New Zealand netball international and a former head coach of both the New Zealand and England national netball teams. She captained New Zealand when they won the 1985 World Games title and coached them when they retained the same title in 1989. In 1989 she was named New Zealand Coach of the Year. Between 1999 and 2008 Gunson also served as head coach and/or director of netball for Team Bath, guiding them to Netball Superleague titles in 2005–06 and 2006–07. Early life and education Gunson is originally from Northland, New Zealand. In 1974 she graduated from the University of Otago with a Diploma in Physical Education. Shirley Langrope
Shirley Anne Langrope (born 15 November 1945) is a former New Zealand netball international. Between 1969 and 1975, she made 19 senior appearances for New Zealand. She was a member of the New Zealand team that won a silver medal at the 1971 World Netball Championships and captained New Zealand when they won a bronze medal at the 1975 World Netball Championships. Four of her cousins – Maxine Blomquist, Annette Heffernan, Kate Heffernan and Georgia Heffernan – have all played international netball for New Zealand.
