Newport, New York
Newport is a town in Herkimer County, New York, United States. The population was 2,302 at the 2010 census. The town, located on the western edge of the county, contains the village of Newport. The town is northeast of Utica. History The first settlement took place after 1786. The town was formed in 1805 from parts of the towns of Fairfield, Herkimer, Norway, and Schuyler. Two structures in the town are listed on the New York State Register of Historic Places and the National Register of Historic Places: James Keith House and Brown-Morey-Davis Farm Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , of which are land and , or 1.37%, are water. The town is named after General Joseph Warren, who was killed at the Battle of Bunker Hill. Warren is in the south part of Herkimer County. US 20 passes across the town. History The area was first settled prior to 1776. The town of Warren was created in 1796 from the town of German Flatts. In 1812, part of Warren was used to form the newer town of Columbia. The population of Warren in 1865 was 1,611. Sunset Hill was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2007. The town is in the northern part of the county and northeast of Utica. Part of Ohio is within the Adirondack Park. History The town of Ohio was established as the town of West Brunswick in 1823 from part of the town of Norway. The name was changed to Ohio in 1836. Ohio was increased by some of the now-defunct town of Wilmurt, which itself had been partly formed with territory from Ohio and the town of Russia in 1836. Norway, New York
Norway is a town in Herkimer County, New York, United States. The population was 762 at the 2010 census. The town is located in the central part of the county and is northeast of Utica. The town borders the Adirondack Park. History The town was permanently settled around 1787 after an abandoned effort in 1786. Norway was formed in 1792 from the town of Herkimer immediately after the creation of Herkimer County. Norway was originally a very large town, and it was subsequently broken up, directly or indirectly, into about 36 new towns in several bordering counties. In Herkimer County, the towns of Fairfield (1796), Russia (1806), Ohio (1823), Wilmurt (now defunct), and Webb (1836) were made by dividing Norway. Part of Newport was taken from Norway in 1806. The Yale-Cady Octagon House and Yale Lock Factory Site is a private residence at 7550 North Main Street in Newport, New York, comprising an historic octagonal house and the adjoining site of the lock factory of Linus Yale, Sr. and his son Linus Yale, Jr., the inventor of the cylinder lock and the founders of the Yale Lock company. Linus Yale, Sr., built the house in 1849 as a gift for his daughter, Chlothilda, who had married Ira L. Cady on July 8, 1839. Currently, the house is a private residence and the Yale Lock Factory is in ruins. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2007. Herkimer County, New York
Herkimer County is a county in the U.S. state of New York. As of the 2020 census, the population was 60,139. Its county seat is Herkimer. The county was created in 1791 north of the Mohawk River out of part of Montgomery County. It is named after General Nicholas Herkimer, who died from battle wounds in 1777 after taking part in the Battle of Oriskany during the Revolutionary War. Herkimer County is part of the Utica–Rome Metropolitan Statistical Area. History In 1791, Herkimer County was created as one of three counties split off from Montgomery (the other two being Otsego and Tioga counties) as New York State was developed after the American Revolutionary War. Its area was much larger than the present county, however, and was reduced subsequently as more counties were organized. The town is named after Litchfield, Connecticut, the source of some early settlers of the city. The town of Litchfield is in the southwestern part of the county and is southeast of Utica.
