Catholic Worker
''Catholic Worker'' is a newspaper published seven times a year by the flagship Catholic Worker community in New York City. The newspaper was started by Dorothy Day and Peter Maurin to make people aware of church teaching on social justice. History It first appeared on May first, 1933 in an edition of 2,500 copies, to make people aware of the social justice teaching of the Catholic Church as an alternative to communism during the Depression. Its stated goal was to comfort the afflicted and to afflict the comfortable. Circulation rapidly rose to 25,000 within a few months, and reached 150,000 by 1936. The ''Catholic Worker'' lost thousands of subscribers because of its strict pacifist stance and refusal to join in the call for U.S. involvement in World War II. Five Towns Jewish Times
The ''Five Towns Jewish Times'' is a weekly newspaper serving the Jewish communities of the Five Towns in southwestern Nassau County, New York, and the greater New York area, covering the area's large and growing Orthodox Jewish community. The paper grew out of publisher Larry Gordon's response to an effort in 2000 by the Lawrence municipality to limit the establishment and growth of local Orthodox synagogues. Gordon wrote a series of articles for the local '' Nassau Herald'', which resulted in an abrupt policy reversal. Believing the Orthodox community needed its own media, Gordon established the ''5 Towns Jewish Times''. Originally published twice a month, it is now published 50 times a year. The newspaper is published by Satmar Hasidim, but is widely read within the broader Yiddish-speaking Haredi community. History ''Der Blatt'' was established in 2000, as a direct result of the Satmar succession feud. Prior to that time, there was only one Satmar newspaper, ''Der Yid''. In the dispute over the succession, ''Der Yid'' came under the control of the supporters of Rabbi Zalman Teitelbaum. This left the supporters of his rival, Rabbi Aaron Teitelbaum, without a platform for communication and public relations, prompting them to establish a newspaper of their own. The resulting publication, but promotes Rabbi Aaron, rather than Rabbi Zalman, as the legitimate successor of the previous rebbe.
