List Of New Mexico Territory Civil War Units
The New Mexico Territory provided the following units for the Union army during the American Civil War. Not yet a state of the Union, it did not have a required quota of soldiers to raise. However, 6,561 men volunteered their services.Phisterer, p. 10. They were primarily raised for defenses within the territory. During the American Civil War, the Union Army, also known as the Federal Army and the Northern Army, referring to the United States Army, was the land force that fought to preserve the Union (American Civil War), Union of the collective U.S. state, states. The New Mexico Territory, comprising what are today the U.S. states of New Mexico and Arizona as well as the southern portion of Nevada, played a small but significant role in the trans-Mississippi theater of the American Civil War. Despite its remoteness from the major battlefields of the east and its existence on the still sparsely populated and largely undeveloped American frontier, both Confederate and Union governments claimed ownership over the territory, and several important battles and military operations took place in the region. In 1861, the Confederacy claimed the southern half of the vast New Mexico Territory as its own Arizona Territory and waged the ambitious New Mexico Campaign in an attempt to control the American Southwest and open up access to Union-held California. 1st Regiment New Mexico Volunteer Cavalry
The 1st Regiment New Mexico Cavalry was a volunteer cavalry regiment in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Service Civil War In August 1861, Ceran St. Vrain and Kit Carson organized the 1st New Mexico Volunteer Infantry Regiment. This regiment fought at the battle of Valverde. On March 31, 1862, the 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 5th New Mexico Infantry Regiments were consolidated to form the 1st New Mexico Volunteer Cavalry Regiment with Kit Carson as colonel. The regiment was dispersed throughout the Department of New Mexico stationed at various frontier forts: Stanton, Goodwin, McRae, Wingate, Craig, Canby, Sumner, Marcy, Bascom, Union, and other points in that department, during entire term of service. Independent Companies, New Mexico Volunteer Militia Infantry
The Independent Companies of New Mexico Militia were units of infantry raised within the New Mexico Territory to serve a three-month term of service for the Union Army during the American Civil War, from November 1861 to February 1862. They were organized for use within the territory, in defense against Indian attacks and invasion by the Texas Rangers. Militia Companies Perea's Battalion of Militia Organized in November and December 1861 for the defenses of New Mexico, the four companies were raised and financially supported by Lt Col Francisco Perea. Stationed at Albuquerque, the battalion was engaged in several campaigns against the Navajo. It was mustered out on 28 February 1862.
