A mascot is any human, animal, or object thought to bring luck, or anything used to represent a group with a common public identity, such as a school, professional sports team, society, military unit, or brand name. Mascots are also used as fictional, representative spokespeople for consumer products. In sports, mascots are also used for merchandising. Team mascots are often related to their respective team nicknames. This is especially true when the team's nickname is something that is a living animal and/or can be made to have humanlike characteristics. The Detroit Pistons are an American professional basketball team based in Detroit. The Pistons compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the league's Eastern Conference Central Division and play their home games at Little Caesars Arena, located in Midtown. Boomer is the official mascot of the Indiana Pacers, a professional basketball team that plays in the National Basketball Association (NBA). The Indiana Pacers are an American professional basketball team based in Indianapolis. The Pacers compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the league's Eastern Conference Central Division. Clutch the Rocket Bear is the mascot for the NBA's Houston Rockets. The informal nickname "Clutch City" was given to Houston, Texas after the Rockets won their first NBA championship in the 1993–94 season. The moniker was adopted in response to a front-page headline in the ''Houston Chronicle'' declaring Houston to be "Choke City" after blowing a 20-point lead earlier in that postseason. Character designer Tom Sapp of Real Characters, Inc. created the bear mascot, appropriately named "Clutch," which was introduced on March 14, 1995.
