This is a list of NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships (other), NCAA Division I outdoor champions in the 400 meters or its imperial equivalent 440 yard dash. For men, the imperial distance was contested until 1975 excepting Olympic years starting in 1932. Metrication occurred in 1976, so all subsequent championships were at the metric distance. Hand timing was used until 1973, while starting in 1974 fully automatic timing was used. The women's race began in 1982. Suziann Reid
Suziann Reid (born January 14, 1977) is an American-Jamaican former track and field sprinter who specialized in the 400-meter dash. She set a personal record of 50.74 seconds for the distance in 1999. She was a silver medalist with the American women's 4 × 400-meter relay team at the 1999 World Championships in Athletics. She was part of the World Championship team twice more, in 2001 and 2005, and helped the United States to silver at the 2002 IAAF World Cup and gold at the 2001 Goodwill Games. Reid competed collegiately for the Texas Longhorns and won three outdoor NCAA titles in the 400 m and two indoor NCAA titles. Francena McCorory
Francena Lynette McCorory (born October 20, 1988) is a retired American track and field athlete, known primarily for running the 400 meters. She was the 2011 World bronze medalist in the 400 meters and was a member of the gold medal-winning 2012 and 2016 United States Olympic 4 x 400 m relay teams. She was the IAAF 400 meter Indoor World Champion in 2014. McCorory retired in 2021. Joanna Atkins (born January 31, 1989) is an American sprinter and American Record Holder who specializes in the 400 meter dash. She attended Stephenson High School in Stone Mountain, GA. Shana Amanda Cox (born January 22, 1985) is an American-born track and field athlete, who competes internationally for Great Britain since 2011. She specialises in the 200 metres and 400 metres. Cox was born in Brooklyn, New York to parents of British descent. Natasha Hastings
Natasha Monique Hastings (born July 23, 1986) is an American 400 meter track and field sprinter. Career Hastings began her track career at a very early age and made a first place win at the USATF Junior Olympics in the 400 metres in the Youth Girls division. She attended A. Philip Randolph Campus High School in Harlem, New York, where she was able to take her track and field interest to a more competitive level. Hastings attended the University of South Carolina to work under Curtis Frye. There, Hastings started to become known as "the 400M Diva" after accidentally describing the ladies track team as the "Gamecock Divas" in honor of the school's mascot, the Gamecock. After coming back from a key injury, 2007 was considered Hastings' breakout year. Monique Marie Henderson (born February 18, 1983 in San Diego, California) is an American track and field athlete, who specializes in the 400-meter dash. Henderson was a gold medalist in both the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece and the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China as a member of the American 4×400-meter relay squad. As a young runner, she set the still standing American record for 9-10-year-old girls in the 400 meters. Henderson prepped at Morse High School in San Diego '01. De'Hashia Tonnek "DeeDee" Trotter (born December 8, 1982 in Twentynine Palms, California) is an American athlete. Trotter is a former NCAA national champion in the 400m, and competed in the 2004, 2008, and 2012 Summer Olympics. Texas Longhorns Women's Track And Field
The Texas Longhorns women's track and field program is coached by Edrick Floréal. Other notable coaches have included Beverly Kearney, who has guided the Lady Longhorns to six NCAA Championships: Indoor Championships in 1998, 1999, and 2006, and Outdoor Championships in 1998, 1999, and 2005; and Terry Crawford, whose teams won Indoor Championships in 1986, 1988, and 1990, and Outdoor Championships in 1982 and 1986. Sanya Richards-Ross (née Richards; born February 26, 1985) is a retired Jamaican-American track and field athlete, who competed internationally for the United States in the 400-meter sprint. Her notable accolades in this event include being the 2012 Olympic champion, 2009 world champion, 2008 Olympic bronze medalist, and 2005 world silver medalist. Allison Beckford
Allison J. Beckford (born 8 May 1979 in Westmoreland) is a Jamaican sprinter competing in the 400 metres. She attended the Manning's School in Savanna-la-Mar, Westmoreland, Jamaica, where she was one of the star athletes coached by Howard Daugharty. She was also academically astute passing several CXC (Caribbean Examination Council) exams and also A-levels exams after completing her upper six forms education. Her personal best of 50.83 was set in 2002. She has also competed in 400 m hurdles.
