Gaston Egmond Thorn (3 September 192826 August 2007) was a Luxembourg politician who served in a number of high-profile positions, both domestically and internationally. Amongst the posts that he held were the 19th Prime Minister of Luxembourg (1974–1979), President of the United Nations General Assembly (1975), and the seventh President of the European Commission (1981–1985). Robert Goebbels (born 3 April 1944) is a former politician in Luxembourg, and a former Member of the European Parliament for the Luxembourg Socialist Workers' Party, part of the Party of European Socialists. Goebbels started his career as one of the editors in charge of international affairs in a Luxembourg daily. From 1972 to 1974 he was elected three times chairman of the Luxembourg Association of Journalists. Goebbels’ political career started as president of the Young Socialists in 1969. Alex Bodry (born 3 October 1958) is a politician from Luxembourg. Life and career Born 3 October 1958 in Dudelange, Bodry lived there since childhood. Josy Barthel
Joseph ("Josy") Barthel (24 April 1927 – 7 July 1992) was a Luxembourgish athlete. He was the surprise winner of the Men's 1500 metres at the 1952 Summer Olympics, and the only athlete representing Luxembourg to have won a gold medal at the Olympics. Besides athletics, Barthel also led successful careers in both chemistry and politics. Biography Born in Mamer, Josy Barthel's abilities as a middle-distance runner were discovered during World War II. His first fame came by winning the 800 m at the Military World Championships in Berlin in 1947. The next year at Military World Championships in Brussels he won both 800 m and 1500 m. Marcel Mart (10 May 1927 – 15 November 2019) was a Luxembourgish politician, jurist, and businessman. Biography Mart was born in Esch-sur-Alzette. He studied law in Paris and at the University of Montpellier graduating in 1953. After university, he practiced law in Luxembourg for a short time. In 1955, he moved out of legal work to become the business editor for '' Agence Europe''. Pierre Werner (29 December 1913 – 24 June 2002) was a Luxembourgian politician in the Christian Social People's Party (CSV) who was the 18th Prime Minister from 1959 to 1974 and from 1979 to 1984.
