Clio, Michigan
Clio () is a city in Genesee County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The city is located entirely within Vienna Township, but is administratively autonomous. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 2,646. Along with the rest of Genesee County, Clio is part of the Flint metropolitan statistical area. History The location was first settled in 1837 by Theodore P. Dean. Originally named Varna after the city's first grain buyer. Pere Marquette Railroad came through and put a station there in 1861. Its name was changed in 1866 to Clio, the muse of history. On July 23, 2007, Governor Jennifer Granholm announced Clio as a community chosen by the Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA), to take part in the Blueprints for Downtowns program. The Clio Depot is a former railroad depot located at 300-308 West Vienna Road in Clio, Michigan. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. The building has been converted into the Clio Depot and Museum. History In 1861, the Pere Marquette Railway constructed a line through Clio to Flint (now the CSX Saginaw Subdivision The Saginaw Subdivision is a railroad line in the U.S. state of Michigan. The line runs 105 miles from Toledo, Ohio, to Saginaw, Michigan. CSX owns the line although since 2006, the section from Mt. Morris to Saginaw has been leased to the Lake ...) . The Civic Park Historic District is a primarily residential historic district roughly bounded by Welch and Brownell Boulevards Trumbull Avenue, Dupont Street, and Dartmouth Street, in Flint, Michigan. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. History In 1917, number of prominent Flint business people formed the Civic Building Association to promote the construction of new housing in the crowded city. The Association purchased 400 acres of land, hired Boston landscape architect William Pitkin to lay out a neighborhood, and retained the New York firm of Davis, McGrath & Kiessling to develop house plans for the site. However, the Association's plans collapsed, due in part to shortages created by World War I.
