A senator for life is a member of the senate or equivalent upper chamber of a legislature who has life tenure. , six Italian senators out of 206, two out of the 41 Burundian senators, one Congolese senator out of 109, and all members of the British House of Lords (apart from the 26 Lords Spiritual who are expected to retire at the age of 70) have lifetime tenure (although Lords can choose to resign or retire or can be expelled in cases of misconduct). Several South American countries once granted lifetime membership to former presidents but have since abolished the practice. Burundi In Burundi, former presidents of the Republic serve in the Senate for life. At present there are two of these: Sylvestre Ntibantunganya and Domitien Ndayizeye. Betty Unger
Betty E. Unger (born August 21, 1943) is a Canadian politician and a former member of the Senate of Canada, from Alberta, Canada from January 2012 until her retirement in August 2018 upon reaching the mandatory retirement age of 75. Outside politics Unger owned and operated a successful nursing services company in Alberta for many years. Political career In 2000 Unger ran for the House of Commons of Canada as a candidate for the Canadian Alliance in Edmonton West, losing a close contest to Liberal Cabinet Minister Anne McLellan. The race was so close that the media prematurely declared a Canadian Alliance victory on election night. In 2004 she ran as a candidate in the 2004 Alberta senate nominee election. Earl Wallace Urquhart
Earl Wallace Urquhart (February 22, 1921 – August 17, 1971) was a Canadian politician and lawyer. Early life Urquhart was born in West Bay, Inverness County, Nova Scotia, Canada. Urquhart served in the Canadian Infantry Corps and the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II. Political career he was elected to the Nova Scotia House of Assembly for Richmond in a 1949 by-election held after Lauchlin Daniel Currie was named to the bench. He served as a member of the assembly from 1949 to 1963. From 1960 to 1962, he was the House Leader. He was Leader of the Nova Scotia Liberal Party from 1962 to 1965. He was summoned to the Senate on February 24, 1966 on the recommendation of Lester B. Pearson.
