Senator For Life
A senator for life is a member of the senate or equivalent upper chamber of a legislature who has life tenure. , six Italian senators out of 206, two out of the 41 Burundian senators, one Congolese senator out of 109, and all members of the British House of Lords (apart from the 26 Lords Spiritual who are expected to retire at the age of 70) have lifetime tenure (although Lords can choose to resign or retire or can be expelled in cases of misconduct). Several South American countries once granted lifetime membership to former presidents but have since abolished the practice. James Shaw (Canadian Politician)
James Shaw (1798 – 6 February 1878) was a businessman and political figure in Canada West and Ontario. He was born in New Ross, Ireland in 1798 and was educated in Dublin. He came to Upper Canada in 1820. He served as a clerk for the settlements at Lanark-on-Clyde and Perth and later served as an overseer during the construction of the Rideau Canal. He served in the local militias, becoming lieutenant colonel in 1860. He opened a store and blacksmith shop in Smiths Falls. In 1851, he was elected to the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada for Lanark; he was reelected in South Lanark in 1854 but was defeated in 1857. Donald Smith (politician)
Donald Smith (7 July 1905 – 7 May 1985) was a Liberal party member of the House of Commons of Canada. He was born in Liverpool, Nova Scotia. He became a dentist, with education from Mount Allison University and Dalhousie University. He attained a DDS degree by 1928. From 1935 to 1939, Smith served as a municipal councillor for Liverpool, Nova Scotia. He was first elected to Parliament at the Queens—Shelburne riding in the 1949 general election. He was the riding's only member, as the electoral district was created in 1947 and the changes undone in 1952. Smith did not seek another Parliamentary term in the 1953 election. David Paul Smith, (May 16, 1941 – February 26, 2020) was a Canadian lawyer, politician and Senator. Municipal politics Smith was an alderman on Toronto City Council in the 1970s. He served a period as deputy mayor and president of city council. He ran for Mayor of Toronto in 1978, but was defeated by John Sewell in a three-way split. Smith became a backroom lobbyist for developers and was instrumental in helping Art Eggleton defeat Sewell in 1980. Benjamin Franklin Smith
Benjamin Franklin Smith (May 8, 1865 – May 19, 1944) was a produce dealer and political figure in New Brunswick, Canada. He represented Carleton County, New Brunswick, Carleton County in the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick from 1903 to 1908, from 1915 to 1920 and from 1925 to 1930 as a Conservative Party of New Brunswick, Conservative member. James Skead
James Skead (December 31, 1817 – July 5, 1884) was an Ontario businessman and politician. He was a Conservative member of the Senate of Canada for Rideau division from 1867 to 1881 and from 1881 until his death in 1884. Biography He was born near Moresby, Cumbria, England in 1817 and studied there, coming to Jesus Island, Lower Canada with his father and two siblings, Robert and Mary Ann, in 1827 at ten years of age. The family later settled in Bytown, Upper Canada in 1832. Skead entered the lumber business in 1842, setting up operations on the Madawaska River. As a result of his experience in building timber slides along that river, he was contracted to design and build an advanced slide on the Ottawa River near Bytown. Murray Sinclair
Calvin Murray Sinclair, (born Mizanay (Mizhana) Gheezhik; January 24, 1951) is a former member of the Canadian Senate and First Nations in Canada, First Nations lawyer who served as chairman of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (Canada), Indian Residential Schools Truth and Reconciliation Commission from 2009 to 2015. Ian David Sinclair, (December 27, 1913 – April 7, 2006) was a Canadian lawyer, businessman, and senator. He was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics in 1937 from the University of Manitoba and a Bachelor of Law degree from the Manitoba Law School in 1941. Sinclair was called to Bar of Manitoba in 1941. From 1942 to 1943, he was a lecturer in torts at the University of Manitoba. In 1942, he started at Canadian Pacific Ltd. in the law department as an assistant solicitor and eventually rose to become president and CEO in 1969. He was also Clchairman and CEO from 1972 to 1981. While president, Sinclair assisted Father David Bauer and the Canada men's national ice hockey team by arranging free and discounted transportation for the team. John Simpson (Ontario Politician)
John Simpson (May 12, 1812 – March 21, 1885) was an Ontario businessman and political figure. He was a Liberal member of the Senate of Canada from 1867 to 1885. He was born in Rothes, Scotland in 1812 and came to Upper Canada with his family in 1815, eventually settling in Brockville. He began work as a clerk in Charles Bowman's general store and mill at Darlington (later Bowmanville) and became Bowman's partner. Simpson excelled at the production of flour. After Bowman's death in 1848, he continued to operate the business in partnership with his brother-in-law. He became manager of the Bank of Montreal branch at Bowmanville in 1848, but became president of the newly formed Ontario Bank in 1857.
