A senator for life is a member of the senate or equivalent upper chamber of a legislature who has life tenure. , six Italian senators out of 206, two out of the 41 Burundian senators, one Congolese senator out of 109, and all members of the British House of Lords (apart from the 26 Lords Spiritual who are expected to retire at the age of 70) have lifetime tenure (although Lords can choose to resign or retire or can be expelled in cases of misconduct). Several South American countries once granted lifetime membership to former presidents but have since abolished the practice. Michael Grattan O'Leary (February 19, 1888–April 7, 1976) was a Canadian journalist, publisher and a member of the Senate of Canada. He was born in Percé, in the Gaspé, Quebec on February 19, 1888. He spent two years at sea before entering journalism with the St. John Standard. He began work at the ''Ottawa Journal'' in 1911. He later became editor of the paper. Louis Auguste Olivier (November 1, 1816 – September 18, 1881) was a Quebec lawyer, judge and political figure. He was a Liberal member of the Senate of Canada for De Lanaudière division from 1867 to 1873. He was born in Berthier-en-Haut, Lower Canada in 1816, the grandson of Louis Olivier, and studied at the Séminaire de Nicolet. Donald H. Oliver (born November 16, 1938) is a Canadian lawyer, developer and politician. Alexander Walker Ogilvie (May 7, 1829 – March 31, 1902) was a Canadian politician and businessman. He and his brothers, William and John, are remembered for their pioneering work in the Canadian milling trade with their company, A. W. Ogilvie & Co. of Montreal, and as pioneers and believers in the success of the Canadian West. Their company expanded to become the largest flour milling company in the British Empire. James O'Brien (August 3, 1836 – May 28, 1903) was a Canadian merchant, wholesaler, and politician. Born in Aughnagar, County Tyrone, Ireland, O'Brien was educated there and moved to British North America in 1850. In 1858, he started business in the wholesale clothing and dry goods trade in Montreal. He retired from that business in 1893. He was a director of the Montreal City and District Savings Bank, the Royal Victoria Life Insurance Company, and also a member of the Board of Trade.
