A senator for life is a member of the senate or equivalent upper chamber of a legislature who has life tenure. , six Italian senators out of 206, two out of the 41 Burundian senators, one Congolese senator out of 109, and all members of the British House of Lords (apart from the 26 Lords Spiritual who are expected to retire at the age of 70) have lifetime tenure (although Lords can choose to resign or retire or can be expelled in cases of misconduct). Several South American countries once granted lifetime membership to former presidents but have since abolished the practice. Burundi In Burundi, former presidents of the Republic serve in the Senate for life. At present there are two of these: Sylvestre Ntibantunganya and Domitien Ndayizeye. Robert Mackay (February 24, 1840 – December 25, 1916) was a Canadian businessman and statesman. Life and career Mackay was born in Caithness, Scotland. An 1855 emigrant to Montreal, Canada from his birthplace in Caithness, Mackay got his start working at the Henry Morgan & Company department store. Charles-Christophe Malhiot
Charles-Christophe Malhiot (October 11, 1808 – November 9, 1874) was a doctor and a member of the Senate of Canada from 1867 until his death. He was born in Verchères in Lower Canada, the son of François-Xavier Malhiot, the seigneur of Verchères. He studied medicine and settled at Yamachiche. In 1835, he married Julie-Éliza Montour, the daughter of Nicholas Montour, Seigneur of Pointe-du-Lac. He was mayor of Pointe-du-Lac from 1859 to 1864. Frank Mahovlich
Francis William Mahovlich CM (born January 10, 1938) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player and a former Liberal Senator in the Canadian Senate. He played on six Stanley Cup-winning teams and is an inductee of the Hockey Hall of Fame. In 2017 Mahovlich was named one of the '100 Greatest NHL Players' in history. Mahovlich was inducted into the Ontario Sports Hall of Fame in 1999. His brother Peter also played in the NHL. His nickname is "The Big M". Shirley Maheu (October 7, 1931 – February 1, 2006) was a Canadian politician. A resident of Saint-Laurent, Quebec since 1965, where she operated a successful insurance brokerage firm in partnership with her husband Renė Maheu, Senator Maheu was a founding member of the Saint-Laurent Chamber of Commerce and served as its first Vice-President. Heath Nelson Macquarrie (September 18, 1919 – January 2, 2002) was a Canadian politician, teacher, scholar, and writer. Macquarrie described himself as a Red Tory, using the term in the title of his autobiography ''Red Tory Blues''. During the October Crisis of 1970, he agonized over the implementation of the War Measures Act, and was prepared to vote against it, but relented for the sake of keeping the Tory caucus united behind Robert Stanfield. Writing in retrospect, Macquarrie described his vote in favour of the Act as "fundamentally wrong". David Lewis Macpherson
Sir David Lewis Macpherson, (September 12, 1818 – August 16, 1896) was a Canadian businessman and political figure. He was a member of the Senate of Canada from 1867 to 1896.
