A senator for life is a member of the senate or equivalent upper chamber of a legislature who has life tenure. , six Italian senators out of 206, two out of the 41 Burundian senators, one Congolese senator out of 109, and all members of the British House of Lords (apart from the 26 Lords Spiritual who are expected to retire at the age of 70) have lifetime tenure (although Lords can choose to resign or retire or can be expelled in cases of misconduct). Several South American countries once granted lifetime membership to former presidents but have since abolished the practice. James Horace King
James Horace King, (January 18, 1873 – July 14, 1955) was a Canadian physician and parliamentarian. Born in Chipman, New Brunswick, James King was the son of George Gerald King, a businessman and Canadian politician in his own right. The elder King was a Liberal Member of Parliament in the nineteenth century, and a Senator from 1896 until his death in 1928. The younger King earned his MD from McGill University in 1895. After practicing medicine for a short period in New Brunswick, he moved to the Kootenay region of British Columbia in 1898 serving a large rural territory. In 1910, he attended an international medical conference in Budapest, and played a leading role in establishing the American College of Surgeons in Chicago, serving as a governor of the college. Ernest Leo Kolber, (January 18, 1929 – January 9, 2020) was a Canadian businessman, philanthropist and Senator, serving from 1983 to 2004. Early life and career Kolber was born in Montreal, Quebec, the son of Luba (Kahan) and Moses Kolber, a doctor. Vim Kochhar
Vim Kochhar (born September 21, 1936) is a Canadian businessman and former Senator, the first person of Indo-Canadian heritage appointed to the Senate of Canada on January 29, 2010. Vim Kochhar obtained an engineering degree from the University of Texas and came to Canada in 1967. He acquired Canadian citizenship in 1974. Adrian Norton Knatchbull-Hugessen, (5 July 1891 – 30 March 1976) was a Canadian lawyer and senator. Knatchbull-Hugessen was born in Ashford, Kent, England on 5 July 1891, the son of Edward Hugessen Knatchbull-Hugessen, 1st Baron Brabourne, and Ethel Mary Walker, daughter of Sir George Gustavus Walker. He was educated at Eton College, but emigrated to Canada to study law at McGill University in Montreal. He was called to the Canadian Bar in 1914. John Nesbitt Kirchhoffer
John Nesbitt Kirchhoffer (May 5, 1848 – December 22, 1914) was a Canadian politician. Born in Ballyvourney, County Cork, Ireland, the son of the Reverend Richard B. Kirchhoffer, Rector of Ballyvourney Parish, he was educated at Marlborough College and came to Canada in 1864. Kirchhoffer served as an Ensign in the Fenian raids in 1866 and subsequently was Captain of one of the Companies of the Port Hope (46th) Battalion. He was called to the Ontario Bar in October 1871 and practiced law in Port Hope, Ontario with his uncle, Nesbitt Kirchhoffer. He moved to Manitoba in 1883, and was called to the Manitoba Bar in 1884. Kirchhoffer founded the town of Souris, Manitoba and the Plum Creek settlement, and served as Reeve and Mayor of Souris. John James Kinley (October 15, 1881 – August 23, 1971) was an industrialist, pharmaceutical chemist, journalist, ship owner and political figure in Nova Scotia, Canada.
