A senator for life is a member of the senate or equivalent upper chamber of a legislature who has life tenure. , six Italian senators out of 206, two out of the 41 Burundian senators, one Congolese senator out of 109, and all members of the British House of Lords (apart from the 26 Lords Spiritual who are expected to retire at the age of 70) have lifetime tenure (although Lords can choose to resign or retire or can be expelled in cases of misconduct). Several South American countries once granted lifetime membership to former presidents but have since abolished the practice. Robert Forke
Robert Forke, (April 6, 1860 – February 2, 1934) was a Canadian politician. He was elected as Member of Parliament for Brandon in 1921. In 1922, he replaced Thomas Crerar as leader of the Progressive Party of Canada. Forke served as a cabinet minister in the government of William Lyon Mackenzie King. Life and career Forke was born in Gordon in Berwickshire, Scotland, and was educated at public school in Westruther. He moved to Canada in 1882, and worked as a farmer. Louis-Joseph Forget
Louis-Joseph Forget (March 11, 1853 РApril 7, 1911) was a Canadian businessman and politician. Life and career Born in Terrebonne, Canada East, he was a stockbroker and then founded his own brokerage firm, ''L. J. Forget et Compagnie'', in 1876. One of the wealthiest French Canadians in Montreal, he was chairman of the Montreal Stock Exchange in 1895 and 1896. He was president of the Montreal Street Railway Company and helped the company switch from horse cars to electric tramways. In 1904, he was the first French Canadian to be appointed to the Board of Directors of the Canadian Pacific Railway. Josée Forest-Niesing (December 18, 1964 – November 20, 2021) was a Canadian lawyer and politician, who was appointed to the Senate of Canada in October 2018. Biography A trial lawyer from Sudbury, Ontario, she served on the boards of the Art Gallery of Sudbury, the Carrefour Francophone de Sudbury, the University of Sudbury and the Ontario Arts Council. Forest-Niesing was hospitalized due to COVID-19 in October 2021; she had an autoimmune condition affecting her lungs, which increased her vulnerability to the virus. Gordon Fogo
James Gordon Fogo, (July 9, 1896 – July 6, 1952) was a Canadian lawyer and senator. Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, the son of Adam Fogo and Alice Hanway, he studied law at Dalhousie University and served as an officer in the Canadian Army (2nd Canadian Siege Battery, Canadian Expeditionary Force) in World War I. Returning from the war in 1919, he served briefly as principal of the high school in Sydney, Nova Scotia. He entered Dalhousie University's School of Law in 1921. Fogo was called to the Nova Scotia bar in 1924 and practised law in Halifax as a member of the Burchell & Ralston law firm. He became a partner in the firm (renamed Burchell, Smith, Parker and Fogo) in 1926, and was appointed King's Counsel in 1938. He remained with that firm until 1946. Billa Flint
Billa Flint (February 9, 1805 – June 15, 1894) was a businessman and political figure in Ontario. He was a Liberal member of the Senate of Canada from 1867 to 1894. He was born in Elizabethtown (later Brockville) in Upper Canada and dropped out of school after six weeks to work for his father as a clerk. In 1829, unhappy with the sale of liquor at his father's hotel, he moved to Belleville and set up his own business there. In the same year, he also founded a temperance society there.
