A sports coach is a person coaching in sport, involved in the direction, instruction and training of a sports team or athlete. History The original sense of the word ''coach'' is that of a horse-drawn carriage, deriving ultimately from the Hungarian city of Kocs where such vehicles were first made. Students at the University of Oxford in the early nineteenth century used the slang word to refer to a private tutor who would drive a less able student through his examinations just like horse driving. Britain took the lead in upgrading the status of sports in the 19th century. For sports to become professionalized, "coacher" had to become established. Norm Smith
Norman Walter Smith (21 November 1915 – 29 July 1973) was an Australian rules football player and coach in the Victorian Football League (VFL). After more than 200 games as a player with and , Smith began a twenty-year coaching career, including a fifteen-year stint at Melbourne. A Legend in the Australian Football Hall of Fame, Smith is regarded as one of the greatest and most influential coaches in the game's history, as well as being one of the finest full-forwards of his era. Like legendary Collingwood coach Jock McHale, Smith could take young players of different backgrounds and mould them into a disciplined team. Todd Viney
Todd Viney (born 30 March 1966) is an Australian rules football executive and former player and coach. He is currently the General Manager of Football of the North Melbourne Football Club. Viney played 13 seasons with in the VFL/AFL, and he later served as their caretaker senior coach for the final five games of the 2011 season. Early life As a youngster, Viney was a talented tennis player and held an Australian Institute of Sport scholarship holder from 1983 to 1984. Dean Bailey
Dean Bailey (18 January 1967 – 11 March 2014) was an Australian rules football player and coach. He played for the Essendon Football Club and was the senior coach of the Melbourne Football Club, as well as an assistant coach at Essendon and Port Adelaide and the Strategy & Innovation Coach at the Adelaide Football Club (Adelaide Crows). Bailey died of lung cancer on 11 March 2014. Playing career Essendon Bailey played 53 games for Essendon, mainly as a centreman. Mark Riley (Australian Rules Coach)
Mark Riley (born 10 October 1963) is a former Australian rules football, most notably as the caretaker senior coach of the Melbourne Football Club in the 2007 season, after senior coach Neale Daniher resigned. Riley was not retained as Melbourne Football Club senior coach at the end of the 2007 season, due to the appointment of Dean Bailey as Melbourne Football Club senior coach. Riley also was an assistant coach with the Fremantle Football Club, Carlton Football Club and the Gold Coast Suns. Playing career As a player Riley played for Claremont in the WAFL. Neale Daniher
Neale Francis Daniher (born 15 February 1961) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with the Essendon Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). He was later the coach of the Melbourne Football Club between 1998 and 2007, and also held coaching positions with Essendon, Fremantle and West Coast. His brothers, Terry, Anthony and Chris, also played for Essendon. Daniher was diagnosed with motor neurone disease in 2014 and is now known as a prominent campaigner for medical research. Greg Hutchison
Greg Hutchison (born 13 June 1957) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with and coached Melbourne Football Club, Melbourne in the Australian Football League, AFL. Playing career Melbourne Football Club Originally from Chelsea Football Club, Hutchinson made his senior VFL debut in 1975 VFL season, 1975 for the Melbourne Football Club and appeared sporadically for the Demons until the early 1980s. Neil Allen Balme (born 15 January 1952) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the Richmond Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL), as well as for the Subiaco Football Club in the Western Australian National Football League (WANFL) and the Norwood Football Club in the South Australian National Football League (SANFL). Throughout his involvement in football, as a player, coach and administrator, Balme has experienced premiership success across a number of clubs. John Northey
John Neville Northey (born 29 June 1943) is a former Australian rules football player and coach. He played from 1963 to 1970 with the Richmond Football Club. Northey was a dual premiership player with Richmond, winning flags in 1967 and 1969. He is better known, however, as a coach. Playing career Richmond A Derrinallum recruit, the lightly framed Northey was a fleetfooted runner and earned the "swooper" nickname by his ability to get the ball and pass it on to a teammate. He played 118 games and kicked 192 goals for Richmond from 1963 until 1970. He also was a member of Richmond's 1967 and 1969 premiership teams. Ron Barassi
Ronald Dale Barassi Jr. (born 27 February 1936) is a former Australian rules footballer, coach and media personality. Regarded as one of the most important figures in the history of the game, Barassi was the first player to be inaugurated into the Australian Football Hall of Fame as a "Legend", and is one of three Australian rules footballers to be elevated to the same status in the Sport Australia Hall of Fame. When Barassi was five years old, his father, Melbourne Football Club player Ron Barassi Sr., died in action at Tobruk during World War II. Barassi was determined to follow in his father's footsteps at Melbourne, and heavy lobbying by the club to recruit him resulted in the introduction of the father-son rule, still in use by the AFL. Carl Ditterich
Carl Robert Ditterich (born 10 October 1945) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the St Kilda Football Club and Melbourne Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL). He also coached Melbourne for two years, as a playing coach. Ditterich, known as the "Blonde Bombshell", made an impressive debut as a 17-year-old for St Kilda against Melbourne in the opening round of the 1963 VFL season, with his speed, high leaping and endurance noted. He became a tough ruckman and often appeared at the VFL Tribunal, in particular missing St Kilda's only premiership victory in 1966 through suspension. Dennis Jones (Australian Footballer)
Dennis Jones (13 November 1936 – 19 December 1999) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Melbourne Football Club, Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (1897–1989), Victorian Football League (VFL). He then moved to South Australia where he coached Central Districts to the finals for the first time. Jones, a half-back, made his senior VFL debut in 1956 VFL season, 1956 and was a member of Melbourne's 1959 VFL Grand Final, 1959 premiership side.
