This is the list of ''Masterpiece Classic'' episodes in order by season. Episodes In early 2008, ''Masterpiece Theatre'' and its affiliated program ''Mystery!'' were reformatted as ''Masterpiece''. ''Masterpiece'' is aired as three different series. Initially, ''Masterpiece Classic'' aired in the winter and early spring, ''Masterpiece Mystery!'' in the late spring and summer, and ''Masterpiece Contemporary'' in the fall. In later seasons, particularly after an increase in funding for WGBH and ''Masterpiece'', the scheduling became more random. Currently, all three programs air at any time throughout the year, and on nearly half the Sundays, two episodes from two different miniseries will air on the same night. This lists the titles of the individual miniseries. Some ran for only one episode, many ran for two or more installments. Mystery!
''Mystery!'' (also written ''MYSTERY!'') is a television anthology series produced by WGBH Boston for PBS in the United States. The series was created as a mystery, police and crime drama spin-off of the already established PBS show ''Masterpiece Theatre''. From 1980 to 2006, ''Mystery!'' aired mostly British crime series purchased from or co-produced with the BBC or ITV and adapted from British mystery fiction. In 2002, due to pressure to include more American material, a series based on the novels of US mystery writer Tony Hillerman was produced, but the vast majority of ''Mystery!'' programming has always been and continues to be British literary adaptations co-produced with UK-based production companies. ''Cranford'' is a British television series directed by Simon Curtis and Steve Hudson. The teleplay by Heidi Thomas was adapted from three novellas by Elizabeth Gaskell published between 1849 and 1858: '' Cranford'', ''My Lady Ludlow'' and ''Mr Harrison's Confessions''. "The Last Generation in England" was also used as a source. The series was transmitted in five parts in the UK by BBC One in November and December 2007. ''The 39 Steps'' is a 2008 British television adventure thriller feature-length adaptation of the 1915 John Buchan novel '' The Thirty-Nine Steps'' produced by the BBC. It was written by Lizzie Mickery, directed by James Hawes, and filmed on location in Scotland, starring Rupert Penry-Jones, Lydia Leonard, David Haig, Eddie Marsan, and Patrick Malahide. Following three screen versions of the novel and the 1952 and 1977 television adaptations of ''The Three Hostages'', Penry-Jones became the sixth actor to portray Hannay on screen. This adaptation is set on the eve of the First World War and sees mining engineer Richard Hannay caught up in an espionage conspiracy following the death of a British spy in his flat. ''Small Island'' is a two-part 2009 BBC One television drama adapted from the 2004 novel of the same title by Andrea Levy. The programme stars Naomie Harris and Ruth Wilson as joint respective female protagonists Hortense Roberts and Queenie Bligh, two women who struggle to fulfil their personal ambitions and dreams amidst the chaos of World War II London and Jamaica. ''Sharpe's Peril'' is a British TV film from 2008, usually shown in two parts, which is part of an ITV series based on Bernard Cornwell's historical fiction novels about the English soldier Richard Sharpe during the Napoleonic Wars. Unlike most parts of the TV series, ''Sharpe's Peril'' and the preceding ''Sharpe's Challenge'' are not based on Cornwell's novels. Both are set in 1817, two years after Sharpe has retired as a farmer in Normandy, so chronologically they come after ''Sharpe's Assassin'' (1815) and before ''Sharpe's Devil'' (1820–1821). ''Sharpe's Challenge'' is a British TV film from 2006, usually shown in two parts, which is part of an ITV series based on Bernard Cornwell's historical fiction novels about the British soldier Richard Sharpe during the Napoleonic Wars. Contrary to most parts of the TV series, ''Sharpe's Challenge'', as well as the follow-up ''Sharpe's Peril'', is not based entirely on one of Cornwell's novels, but it uses and adapts some characters and storylines from ''Sharpe's Tiger'' (1997). ''Sharpe'' is a British television drama series starring Sean Bean as Richard Sharpe, a fictional British soldier in the Napoleonic Wars, with Irish actor Daragh O'Malley playing his second in command Patrick Harper. Sharpe and Harper are the heroes of the ''Sharpe'' series of novels by Bernard Cornwell; most, though not all, of the episodes are based on the books. Produced by Celtic Films and Picture Palace Films for the ITV network, the series was filmed mainly in Crimea, with recording of other episodes in Turkey, England, Portugal and Spain.
