Abraham Malpan
Palakunnathu Abraham Malpan (പാലകുന്നത്ത് അബ്രഹാം മൽപ്പാൻ), (30 May 1796 – 9 September 1845) was an Indian cleric and theologian known for the Reformation movement within the Malankara Church during the 19th century. He was born in the ancient Syrian Christian Palakunnathu family which practiced West Syriac Rite Oriental Orthodoxy after the Coonan Cross Oath of 1653. Abraham Malpan translated and revised the West Syriac liturgy, restoring the Church to what he considered to be its position before the Synod of Diamper in 1599. He therefore strove for the abolition of auricular confession, prayers for the dead, intercession of saints, and veneration of sacraments. Further he emphasized the reading and study of the Bible, family-worship and evangelistic work. He insisted on a high moral standard of conduct for laity and clergy. Thomas Chandy
Thomas Chandy (29 October 1947 – 20 December 2019) was an Indian businessman and politician. He was a Member of the Legislative Assembly (India), member of the Kerala Legislative Assembly from the Kuttanad (State Assembly constituency), Kuttanad constituency, the transport minister of the state of Kerala, and president of the Nationalist Congress Party in Kerala. He resigned from the minister's office on 15 November 2017 after an allegation regarding his resort in Alappuzha arose. He died in Kochi on 20 December 2019 from cancer. Personal life Thomas Chandy was born on 29 October 1947, one of the sons of V. C. Thomas and Aleyamma Thomas at Chennamkary. He was educated at Devamatha High School in Chennamkary, St. Mary's HS Kainakary and at Leo XIII English Medium School in Alappuzha. Kuzhuvelil Varkey Mathew (born 2 November 1931) is an Indian biblical scholar and a member Fr. Max Gonsalves (Ed.), Society for Biblical Studies in India Directory 1998. Sarah Thomas (writer)
Sarah Thomas (born 15 September 1934) is a Malayalam language writer from Kerala, India. Her novel ''Narmadi Pudava'' won the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award in the year 1979. Thomas is also a recipient of Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for Overall Contribution to Malayalam Literature. Career Thomas had started writing long before the concept of feminine literature evolved in Malayalam. She published her first novel ''Jivitamenna Nadi'' at the age of 34. She became noted in the literary field after the publication of the novel ''Murippadukal'' in 1971. The novel narrated the life of a young man brought up in a Roman Catholic orphanage and later transferred to his Hindu ancestral home, where he is subtly persuaded to conform to Hindu religious beliefs. Anna Sujatha Mathai (1933/1934 – 16 March 2023) was an Indian poet. Biography Anna Sujatha Mathai was born to Syrian Christian parents. She completed her B.A. (Honours) degree in English Language and Literature from Miranda College and a post-graduate degree in Social Studies from the University of Edinburgh. She worked in this field in England for some years. Mathai’s poems have been published in ''The Penguin Book of Contemporary Women Poets'', ''In Their Own Voice'', edited by Arlene R. K. Kakkanadan
George Varghese Kakkanadan (23 April 1935 – 19 October 2011), commonly known as Kakkanadan, was an Indian short-story writer and novelist in the Malayalam language. His works broke away from the neo-realism that dominated Malayalam literature through the 1950s and 1960s. He is often credited with laying the foundation of modernism in Malayalam literature. He is a recipient of Kendra Sahitya Akademi Award and Kerala Sahitya Akademi Awards in addition to numerous other awards and recognitions. Life Early years Born in Thiruvalla as the second son of evangelist George Kakkanadan and Rosamma, George Varghese Kakkanadan spent most of his childhood at Kollam and Kottarakkara. George Joseph (Kerala)
George Joseph (5 June 1887 – 5 March 1938) was a lawyer and Indian independence activist. One of the earliest and among the most prominent Syrian Christians from Kerala to join the freedom struggle, Joseph's working life in Madurai and is remembered for his role in the Home Rule agitation and the Vaikom Satyagraha and for his editorship of Motilal Nehru's ''The Independent'' and Mahatma Gandhi's ''Young India''. Titusji
Titusji was one of the 78 marchers selected by Mahatma Gandhi to take part in the 1930 Dandi March, to break the salt law. He served as governing secretary for Gandhi's Sabarmati Ashram milk project near Ahmedabad. Gulzarilal Nanda, who later became Prime Minister of India, was the secretary of another unit. Both of them were trusted friends of Gandhi. His given name was Titus Theverthundiyil, while "Titusji" was the honorific given to him by Mahatma Gandhi. Rosamma Punnoose
Rosamma Punnoose (12 May 1913 – 28 December 2013) was an Indian independence activist, politician and lawyer. She was the first person to be sworn in as a member of the Kerala Legislative Assembly. She was also the first MLA in India to lose her seat following a court order, and the first person to be elected in the first-ever by-election to the assembly in 1958. Punnoose was also the first pro tem Speaker of the Kerala Legislative Assembly.
