Malawi
Malawi (; or aláwi Tumbuka: ''Malaŵi''), officially the Republic of Malawi, is a landlocked country in Southeastern Africa that was formerly known as Nyasaland. It is bordered by Zambia to the west, Tanzania to the north and northeast, and Mozambique to the east, south and southwest. Malawi spans over and has an estimated population of 19,431,566 (as of January 2021). Malawi's capital (and largest city) is Lilongwe. Its second-largest is Blantyre, its third-largest is Mzuzu and its fourth-largest is its former capital, Zomba. The name ''Malawi'' comes from the Maravi, an old name for the Chewa people who inhabit the area. The country is nicknamed "The Warm Heart of Africa" because of the friendliness of its people. Violet Banda (born 1991 or 1992) is a reporter and children's rights activist from Malawi. Through her weekly radio appearances, she has drawn the attention of the Malawian public and government to the problems affecting children in her country, including abuse, rape, forced marriage, and discrimination based on HIV status. Early life Banda was born with HIV. Both of her parents had the virus and died from it. Her mother died when Banda was three. She found out that herself was HIV positive when she was 14. "When I found out I was positive, I was in primary school," Banda has said. "Whenever I would tell people about my status it happened that I lost all my friends. Some didn't want to be near me or touch me. They just ran away." This treatment made it difficult for her to perform in school. David Blair (journalist)
David Blair (born 1973 in Malawi to British parents) is the Chief Foreign Correspondent for ''The Daily Telegraph'', having formerly worked for the ''Financial Times'' as Energy Correspondent, and ''The Daily Telegraph'' as a Foreign Correspondent and then Diplomatic Editor. Early life and education Blair graduated from St Benet's Hall, Oxford, with a First Class degree in PPE. He was President of the Oxford University Conservative Association in 1993. He later attended Corpus Christi College, Cambridge University, taking a M.Phil in International Relations. In 1994, Blair represented Oxford at the grand final of the World Universities Debating Championship with Rufus Black. Although born in Malawi, Blair is a British citizen. Onesimo Makani Kabweza
Onesimo Makani Kabweza (1939 – 27 April 1993) was a Zimbabwean journalist and the editor of ''Moto Magazine'' in Zimbabwe. He took the lead in giving voice to critics of the Zimbabwean government and Robert Mugabe in the period that followed 1980 independence. History Onesimo was a Zimbabwean by birth from Malawian parents. He spent all of his childhood in Zimbabwe, where he also enrolled to become a Catholic priest, a profession he left before qualifying and worked as a writer for ''Moto'' magazine. Emily Mkamanga
Emily Lilly Mkamanga (27 December 1949 – 28 November 2021) was a Malawian writer and social commentator. She was one of the few well-known female writers in Malawi. Early life Emily Lilly Mkamanga was born in Chilumba, Nyasaland, on 27 December 1949. She was educated at Livingstonia, Uliwa, Lilongwe Girls' Secondary School and the University of Malawi, where she studied in the Bunda College of Agriculture and graduated in 1971. Career After working at Chitedze Agricultural Research Station, she spent fifteen years as an Agricultural Information Officer at the National Bank. While still there, in 1990 she published ''The Night Stop'', a novel about "the long-suffering wife of a promiscuous lawyer". Mkamanga's retirement from the bank in 1993 coincided with the end of Dr. Hastings Banda's 30 years in power. Agnes Mizere is a retired Malawian TV personality, journalist, storyteller and blogger. She was a journalist in Malawi for over twenty years and is one of the pioneers of TV Malawi when it first launched in 1999. She is best known for covering issues about Malawian traditional cultures and women, children and Youth.
