Arthur O'Neill
Arthur Edward Bruce O'Neill (19 September 1876 – 6 November 1914), was an Irish Ulster Unionist Party politician who was the first Member of Parliament to be killed in World War I. Early life O'Neill was the second but eldest surviving son of Edward O'Neill, 2nd Baron O'Neill, and his wife Lady Louisa Katherine Emma (née Cochrane). Hugh O'Neill, later Baron Rathcavan, was his younger brother. Career Military career O'Neill joined the British Army as a second lieutenant in the 2nd Regiment of Life Guards on 26 May 1897, and was promoted to lieutenant on 15 June 1898. He saw active service in South Africa between 1899 and 1900, during the Second Boer War, for which he was awarded the Queen's South Africa Medal with three clasps. On 3 January 1902 he was promoted to captain, and temporary appointed adjutant to the 2nd Life Guards. O'Neill fought in the First World War as a captain in "A" Squadron 2nd Life Guards. Mid Antrim was a UK Parliament constituency in Ireland which returned one Member of Parliament from 1885 to 1922, using the first past the post electoral system. James McCalmont
Colonel James Martin McCalmont (23 May 1847 – 2 February 1913) was a British Army officer and Conservative, later Irish Unionist, politician. Early life and education McCalmont was born in May 1847, second and final son of James McCalmont (1819–1849), JP, DL for County Antrim, and his wife Emily Anne Martin (1827–1901). His older brother was Major-General Sir Hugh McCalmont, Member of Parliament for North Antrim from 1895 to 1899. Both he and his brother were educated at Eton College. Military career After leaving Eton, McCalmont joined the 8th Hussars as a Cornet in 1866. He was promoted to Lieutenant in 1869, then Captain in 1871. He retired from the Hussars in 1874, in order to pursue a career in politics. Two years later, he resumed his career as a Lieutenant with the Denbighshire Hussars and was re-promoted to captain in 1877. Sir Ellis Jones Ellis-Griffith, 1st Baronet, PC, KC (23 May 1860 – 30 November 1926) was a British barrister and radical Liberal politician. He was born Ellis Jones Griffith. Family and education Griffith was the only child of Thomas Morris Griffith (1827-1901), a master builder, and his wife Jane (née Jones) (1823-1881). Both his parents were Welsh, but had been living in Birmingham and the time of his birth, before moving to Brynsiencyn when Griffith was a child. He was initially educated at the Holt Academy, and passed both the Cambridge & Oxford local examinations in 1873. The following year he passed a scholarship examination for the University College, Aberystwyth, where he began studying in 1876. He took an arts degree at the University of London in 1879, graduating with double honours in English and Philosophy, before moving to Downing College, Cambridge, in 1880, where he read law and was President of the Cambridge Union. Anglesey (; cy, (Ynys) Môn ) is an island off the north-west coast of Wales. It forms a principal area known as the Isle of Anglesey, that includes Holy Island across the narrow Cymyran Strait and some islets and skerries. Sir William John Crossley, 1st Baronet (22 April 1844 – 12 October 1911) was a British engineer and Liberal politician. W J Crossley was born at Glenburn, near Lisburn, County Antrim.
