List Of MPs Elected In The 1965 Ghanaian Parliamentary Election
This is a list of members of parliament appointed to represent the various constituencies of Ghana in 1965. Composition In 1964 a constitutional amendment was passed by the CPP majority in parliament to make the country a One-party state. All members of the 1965 parliament therefore belonged to one political party; the Convention People's Party. Additional constituencies were created compared to the previous parliament and 10 females were appointed to parliament by the President. All were members of the Convention Peoples Party. One-party State
A one-party state, single-party state, one-party system, or single-party system is a type of sovereign state in which only one political party has the right to form the government, usually based on the existing constitution. All other parties are either outlawed or allowed to take only a limited and controlled participation in elections. Sometimes the term "''de facto'' one-party state" is used to describe a dominant-party system that, unlike the one-party state, allows (at least nominally) democratic multiparty elections, but the existing practices or balance of political power effectively prevent the opposition from winning power. Although it is predated by the 1714 to 1783 "age of the Whig oligarchy" in Great Britain, the rule of the Committee of Union and Progress (CUP) over the Ottoman Empire following the 1913 coup d'etat is often considered the first one-party state. David Kwaku Ziga
David Kwaku Ziga was a Ghanaian politician and potter. He was a member for parliament for the Afadzato constituency from 1965 to 1966, he was also the managing proprietor of Ziga Pottery and Ceramic Works. Early life and education Ziga was born on 20 April 1922 at Have Etoe in the Afadzato South District, Volta Region. He had his early education at Agate E. P. Primary School and the E. P. Middle School in Kpando. He later proceeded to Achimota College to study Arts and Craft from 1940 to 1944. In 1952 he won a government scholarship to study a two (2)- year pottery and ceramics programme at the North Staffordshire Technical College (now Staffordshire University). Bashiru Kwaw-Swanzy
Bashiru Kwaw-Swanzy (25 October 1921 – 15 September 1997) was a Ghanaian politician, who served as Attorney-General and Minister of Justice in the First Republic. Born Benard Edward Kwaw-Swanzy, he was also known as Bartholomew Ebassuah Kwaw-Swanzy and later as Alhaji Bashiru Kwaw-Swanzy. Early life and education He was born on 25 October 1921 at Beyin, an Nzema area in the Western Region of Ghana. He attended Roman Catholic schools in Axim, Eikwe and Half Assini from 1927 to 1933. He attended St. Theresa's Seminary in Amisano from 1933 to 1938 in hopes of becoming a Catholic priest. In 1939, he entered Prince of Wales College, later known as Achimota School, where he obtained his Cambridge Certificate in 1940, and he continued at St. Augustine's College, Cape Coast, in 1941 to train as a teacher, receiving his Gold Coast teachers' certificate in 1942. Michael Paul Ansah
Michael Paul Ansah (born 31 October 1928) was a Ghanaian politician who served in the First and Third Republics. He served as a member of parliament for the Akwamu constituency from 1965 to 1966 and the member of parliament for the Mid-Volta constituency from 1979 to 1981. He also served as the Minister for Health from 1979 to 1981 and the Minister for Industry, Science and Technology from August 1981 to December 1981. Kingsley Asiam (1921-1982) was a Ghanaian politician in first republic. He was the member of parliament for the Akwapim South constituency from 1954 to 1965 and the member of parliament for the Akropong constituency from 1965 to 1966. Prior to entering parliament he was the Intelligence Officer for the Cocoa Purchasing Company. Early life and education Asiam was born in 1921. He was educated at the Accra Methodist School. Kofi Agyare
Kofi Agyare was a Ghanaian politician. He was the member of parliament for Akim Manso from 1965 to 1966. Early life and education Agyare was born in 1913 at Abetifi, a town in the Eastern Region of Ghana (then Gold Coast). He had his education at the Presby Junior School and Presby Senior School all in the Abetifi-Kwahu area from 1921 to 1931. Career and politics After school he worked as a registrar at the Omanhene's (traditional ruler) tribunal in Kwahu Abene from 1932 to 1933. In 1934 he moved to Koforidua to work at Cadbury as a station clerk. From 1936 to 1938 he was the registrar of the Paramount Tribunal and Buem State Council at Borada in the Volta Region. Kojo Obed Amoako-Prempeh
Kojo Obed Amoako-Prempeh was a Ghanaian public servant and politician. He was the member of parliament for the Akan Wawa constituency from 9 June 1965 to February 1966 when the Nkrumah government was overthrown. At the inception of the third republic, he was elected as the member of parliament for the Akan constituency on the ticket of the People's National Party. Theodore Obo Asare Jr. (1926 - 1994) was a Ghanaian politician in first republic. He was the member of parliament for the Akan Bowiri constituency from 1965 to 1966. Prior to entering parliament he was the chairman of the Ghana Commercial Bank. Early life and education Asare was born on 19 November 1926 at Worawora, a town in the Oti Region of Ghana. Anthony Seibu Alec Abban was a Ghanaian teacher and politician. He was member of parliament in the first republic. He first served as a member of parliament for Ajumako-Asikuma electoral district from 1954 to 1965. In 1965 the constituency was split and he served as the member of parliament representing the Ajumako electoral area. He was also deputy minister in various portfolios in the first republic. Ashford Emmanuel Inkumsah was a Ghanaian chemist and politician. He occupied various ministerial portfolios during the first republic. He was the first deputy speaker of parliament from 1965 to 1966. Swithin Maxwell Arko (1920-2006) was a Ghanaian politician in the first republic. He was the member of parliament for the Agona Nsaba constituency from 1965 to 1966.
