Road Designation
A route (or road) number, designation or abbreviation is an identifying numeric (or alphanumeric) designation assigned by a highway authority to a particular stretch of roadway to distinguish it from other routes and, in many cases, also to indicate its classification (e.g. motorway, primary route, regional road, etc.), general geographical location (in zonal numbering systems) and/or orientation (north-south v. east-west). The numbers chosen may be used solely for internal administrative purposes; however, in most cases they are also displayed on roadside signage and indicated on maps. Use of letters Letters are often used in road designations to indicate a class of roadways. Within such a class, roads are distinguished from each other by a road number. The way such letters are used depends on the country or other political jurisdiction which contains and controls the road. South Eastern Freeway
South Eastern Freeway is a freeway in South Australia (SA). It is a part of the National Highway network linking the state capital cities of Adelaide, SA, and Melbourne, Victoria, and signed as National Highway M1. It carries traffic over the Adelaide Hills between Adelaide and the River Murray, near Murray Bridge, where it is connected via the Swanport Bridge to the Dukes Highway, which is the main road route to Victoria. It was formerly signposted as Princes Highway, which refers to the coastal route from Adelaide to Sydney via Melbourne. It is often referred to by South Australians simply as the Freeway, as it was the first freeway in South Australia, and is still the longest, and the only one with "Freeway" in its name rather than "Expressway" or "Highway". M1 Motorway (Pakistan)
The M-1 motorway or the Islamabad–Peshawar Motorway ( ur, ) is an east–west motorway in Pakistan, connecting Peshawar to Islamabad–Rawalpindi. The motorway was constructed during President Pervez Musharraf's rule at a cost of Rs. 13 billion, and was opened in October 2007. It spans , with in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and in Punjab. History Work on M-1 was started during Nawaz Sharif's tenure in 1997, and the contract was awarded to Turkish company Bayindar. However, the work stopped after his government was dismissed by Army chief Gen.Pervez Musharraf in october 1999. Progress remained very slow and not much work was done between 1999 and 2003. Work restarted in 2003 after the contract was re-awarded to a consortium PMC-JV during President Pervez Musharraf's tenure. M1 Road (Zambia)
The M1 Road is a road in northern Zambia. It connects Mpika in Muchinga Province with Mbala in the Northern Province on the border with Tanzania and the Mpulungu port of Lake Tanganyika via Kasama. The northern section is a toll road (there is a tollgate between Kasama and Mbala). This stretch of road is commonly known as the ''Old Great North Road'', as the name ''Great North Road'' has been given to the T2 Road from Mpika to the border with Tanzania after Nakonde, which is part of the Tanzam Highway, Cape to Cairo Road and Cairo-Cape Town Highway (as a result, the T2 is a more recognized route). The M1 is a metropolitan route in the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality, South Africa, linking Pinetown to Mobeni in Durban via Chatsworth. Route The M1 officially starts at the M13 interchange (Exit 19) with the M31 Josiah Gumede Road, west of the Pinetown Central Business District (CBD) as Henry Pennington Road (previously Richmond Road). It proceeds southwards past the suburbs of Ashley, Surprise Farm, Alexander Park and Westmead before meeting the N3 highway (to Durban and Pietermaritzburg) at the Exit 23 interchange. The M1 proceeds to turn in a southwesterly direction traversing through the suburbs of Mariannhill Park, Mariannhill, Mariannheights and Mariannridge before meeting the Old Richmond Road (to Eston and Richmond). M1 Road (Pretoria)
The M1 road is a short metropolitan route in the City of Tshwane in Gauteng, South Africa. It connects Pretoria West and the Pretoria CBD with Pretoria North via Mayville. It is an alternative route to the R101 Route for travel between Pretoria CBD and Pretoria North. Route The M1 route begins at a junction with the M2 route (Nana Sita Street; Charlotte Maxeke Street) and the western terminus of the M6 route (Visagie Street). It heads northwards as Es'kia Mphahlele Drive (formerly DF Malan Drive), separating Pretoria West in the west from Pretoria CBD in the east and meeting the R104 Route (WF Nkomo Street) and the M22 route at the next junction. The M1 De Villiers Graaff motorway is a metropolitan route and major freeway in the City of Johannesburg, South Africa. The highway connects the southern areas (including Booysens, Eldorado Park and Soweto) with the city centre and extends further north through Sandton into the Ben Schoeman Highway towards Pretoria. Construction began in 1962 and resulted in the demolition of many properties and houses including numerous historical Parktown Mansions. M01 is a Ukraine international highway ( M-highway) that stretches from the state capital, Kyiv, to the northern border with Belarus. Together with the M05 it is a part of the European routes E95 (Saint Petersburg – Kyiv – Odessa Samsun – Merzifon) and the Trans-European transportation corridor IX. Also together with the M02 it is part of E101 (Kyiv – Moscow). Route / Junctions is long going in the north-south direction. It forms the large majority of the N1 national primary road connecting Dublin towards Belfast along the east of the island of Ireland.
