This is a list of lieutenant-governors of the North-Western Provinces. The provisional establishment of the lieutenant-governors of the North-Western Provinces happened in 1836 until the title was merged with Chief Commissioners of Oudh and was renamed as lieutenant-governors of the North-Western Provinces and chief commissioners of Oudh in 1877. North-Western Provinces
The North-Western Provinces was an administrative region in British India. The North-Western Provinces were established in 1836, through merging the administrative divisions of the Ceded and Conquered Provinces. In 1858, the nawab-ruled kingdom of Oudh was annexed and merged with the North-Western Provinces to form the renamed North-Western Provinces and Oudh. In 1902, this province was reorganized to form the United Provinces of Agra and Oudh. Allahabad served as its capital from 1858, when it also became the capital of India for a day. Area The province included all divisions of the present-day state of Uttar Pradesh with the exception of the Lucknow Division and Faizabad Division of Awadh. George Frederick Edmonstone
Sir George Frederick Edmonstone, KCB (11 April 1813 – 24 September 1864) was an administrator in India. Life Edmonstone was born in Calcutta, the fourth son of Neil Benjamin Edmonstone (1765–1841), a member of the supreme council in India and a director of the East India Company. In 1829 Edmonstone went to the East India College at Haileybury, the precursor of Haileybury and Imperial Service College, before proceeding to Bengal in 1831. He held various positions in the Indian civil service before being appointed as Lieutenant-Governor of the North-Western Provinces from 19 January 1859 to 27 February 1863. Sir George Ebenezer Wilson Couper, 2nd Baronet, (29 April 1824 – 5 March 1908) was a British civil servant in India. Biography Couper was the eldest son of Colonel Sir George Couper, Chief Equerry and Comptroller of the Household of Princess Victoria, Duchess of Kent. His father was created a baronet in 1841. He was educated at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. He was sent to India in 1846 and joined the Bengal Civil Service. He was appointed a Companion of the Order of the Bath in the 1860 Birthday Honours while serving as Secretary to the Chief Commissioner of Oude, James Outram. From 26 July 1876 to 15 February 1877, he was Lieutenant-Governor of the North-Western Provinces.
