LGBT Social Movements
Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) movements are social movements that advocate for LGBT people in society. Some focus on equal rights, such as the ongoing movement for same-sex marriage, while others focus on liberation, as in the gay liberation movement of the 1960s and 1970s. Earlier movements focused on self-help and self-acceptance, such as the homophile movement of the 1950s. Although there is not a primary or an overarching central organization that represents all LGBT people and their interests, numerous LGBT rights organizations are active worldwide. The earliest organizations to support LGBT rights were formed in the early 20th century. A commonly stated goal among these movements is social equality for LGBT people, but there is still denial of full LGBT rights. Gery Keszler
The Life Ball in Vienna is the biggest charity event in Europe supporting people with HIV or AIDS. The event is organized by the nonprofit organization AIDS LIFE, which was founded in 1992 by Gery Keszler and Torgom Petrosian. AIDS LIFE supports aid organizations devoted to helping people who are HIV-positive or have AIDS. The team entrusted with the allocation of funds thoroughly examines each petition. Moreover, it is an explicit goal of AIDS LIFE to raise public awareness. Desislava Dobreva Petrova (Bulgarian: Десислава Добрева Петрова; born 12 December 1980) is a Bulgarian gay rights activist and former president of BGO Gemini - Bulgaria's largest LGBT rights organization. She has struggled for equal rights for LGBT people since 2000. As Chair of the Bulgarian gay organization Gemini, the oldest and only national membership LGBT rights-based NGO in Bulgaria, Petrova has been responsible for the overall management of the organization. Míriam Martinho
Míriam Martinho (born 1954) is one of the leading feminists in Brazil and part of the second generation of feminist journalists, who emerged in the 1980s. She was one of the first people to bring lesbianism openly into the fold of feminism and founded one of the first Lesbian-Feminist organizations in the country. She and Rosely Roth gained recognition for staging a protest, known at the "Brazilian Stonewall" at Ferro's Bar in 1983. She has written for numerous LGBT and feminist journals and has submitted expert testimony on the state of the LGBT community in Brazil. João Silvério Trevisan (born June 23, 1944 in Ribeirão Bonito, São Paulo) is Brazilian author, playwright, journalist, screenwriter and film director. In his much-diversified oeuvres, he has published eleven books, among them great works of fiction, essays, short stories, and screenplays. Trevisan has been influential as a literary and cultural critic, particularly on gay and lesbian issues and his works have been translated into English, Spanish, and German. Toni Reis (born in 1964) is the president of the Brazilian LGBT organisation called Grupo Dignidade, the general secretary of the national association of Gays, Lesbians and Transsexuals in Brazil ( Associação Brasileira de Gays, Lésbicas e Transgêneros/ ABGLT) of which he was a founding president in 1995, and a member of the international council of the Hirschfeld Eddy Foundation. Luiz Roberto de Barros Mott or Luiz Mott (born 6 May 1946) in São Paulo (city), São Paulo, is an anthropologist and a gay rights activist in Brazil. Caleb Orozco
Caleb Orozco (born 1973) is an LGBT activist in Belize. He was the chief litigant in a case successfully challenging the anti-sodomy laws of Belize and the co-founder of the only LGBT advocacy group in the country. Biography Orozco became politically active when he was 31, after attending a workshop in Belize City for gay men and for people living with HIV. Orozco co-founded the United Belize Advocacy Movement (UNIBAM) in 2006, and later became the president. UNIBAM is the country's only LGBT advocacy group and has been using the legal system to challenge the anti-sodomy laws in Belize. UNIBAM is run out of Orzoco's home. Derricia Castillo-Salazar (born 1988), also known as Derricia Jael Castillo, is a Belizean military officer, aircraft maintenance officer of the Belize Defence Force (BDF) and LGBT activist. She is the co-founder and president of Our Circle (Belize), an organization dedicated to the inclusion of the LGBT community. Biography After a year-long training to learn how a rotorcraft operates, she is among 13 trained technicians in charge of keeping in deployment conditions three helicopters of the Belize Defence Force, as well as the first helicopter maintenance personnel of the BDF after the British Arm Training and Support Unit Belize scaled down their operations in 2011. Xulhaz Mannan
Xulhaz Mannan ( bn, জুলহাজ মান্নান; 12 October 1976 – 25 April 2016) was an employee of the United States embassy in Dhaka and the founder of Bangladesh's first and only LGBT-themed magazine, '' Roopbaan''. He was killed in his apartment along with another LGBT activist Mahbub Rabbi Tonoy in a machete attack by Islamist extremists.
