Korean Peninsula
Korea ( ko, 한국, or , ) is a peninsular region in East Asia. Since 1945, it has been divided at or near the 38th parallel, with North Korea (Democratic People's Republic of Korea) comprising its northern half and South Korea (Republic of Korea) comprising its southern half. Kim Won-il (born January 3, 1982) is a South Korean boxer best known to win the gold medal in the men's bantamweight division at the Asian Games 2002. In 2002 he bested Abdusalom Khasanov and Bekzod Khidirov in the final. Yuh Hwan-kil
Yuh Hwan-kil (; September 23, 1962 – April 21, 2009) was a South Korean former professional boxer who has held the inaugural IBF junior-lightweight title between April 1984 to February 1985. Professional career On December 6, 1981, he won the vacant OPBF featherweight title and defended it three times. On April 22, 1984, Yuh won the inaugural IBF junior-lightweight champion with a split decision win over Rod Sequenan. He defended the belt once before losing it to Lester Ellis in 1985. Dong-Kyun Yum (Hangul: 염동균, Hanja: 廉東均) (born November 10, 1950, in Okcheon, Chungcheongbuk-do) is a former Professional boxing, professional boxer from South Korea. He is a former Lineal championship, Lineal and World Boxing Council, WBC junior featherweight champion. Boxing career Yum turned professional on March 7, 1970. He became the World Boxing Council, WBC and Lineal championship, Lineal Super Bantamweight champion when he defeated Royal Kobayashi by majority decision over 15 rounds. In the following year, he successfully defended his titles against Jose Cervantes but lost to Wilfredo Gómez in his third title defense. He retired in 1980 with an impressive record of 53 wins with 21 knockouts, 5 defeats and 8 draws. Hong Soo-hwan
Hong Soo-hwan (Hangul: 홍수환, born May 26, 1950) is a South Korean former professional boxer who competed between 1969 and 1980. He is a world champion in two weight classes, having held the WBA and ''The Ring'' bantamweight titles from 1974 to 1975 and the WBA super-bantamweight title from 1977 to 1978. Professional career Hong turned pro in 1969 and in 1974 captured the WBA and ''The Ring'' bantamweight title with a decision win over Arnold Taylor in a fight in which Taylor was down in the 1st, 5th, and 14th rounds. He lost his title in his 2nd defense to Alfonso Zamora in 1975. In 1977 he captured the vacant WBA super bantamweight title in a 3rd-round knockout of Hector Carrasquilla. Hong was down 4 times in the 2nd and came back in the following round to win. He lost the title in his 2nd defense to Ricardo Cardona in 1978. Ki Soo Kim
Kim Ki-soo (; September 17, 1939 – June 10, 1997) was a South Korean former professional boxer who competed from 1961 to 1969. He was South Korea's first world boxing champion, having held the undisputed WBA and WBC super-welterweight titles from 1966 to 1968. Amateur career Kim graduated from Kyung Hee University's College of Physical Education. He competed in boxing at the 1958 Asian Games in Tokyo, where he earned the gold medal of the welterweight division by defeating Soren Pirjanian of Iran, on points, in the final. Kim Duk-koo (Hangul:김득구; born Lee Deokgu, Hangul: 이덕구; July 29, 1955November 18, 1982) was a South Korean boxer who died after fighting in a world championship boxing match against Ray Mancini. His death sparked reforms aimed at better protecting the health of boxers, including reducing the number of rounds in championship bouts from 15 to 12. Early life and education Kim was born in Gangwon Province, South Korea, 100 miles east of Seoul, the youngest of five children. His father died when he was two and his mother married three more times. Kim grew up poor. He worked odd jobs such as a shoe-shining boy and a tour guide before getting into boxing in 1976.
