The title of Knight Bachelor is the basic rank granted to a man who has been knighted by the monarch but not inducted as a member of one of the organised orders of chivalry; it is a part of the British honours system. Knights Bachelor are the most ancient sort of British knight (the rank existed during the 13th-century reign of King Henry III), but Knights Bachelor rank below knights of chivalric orders. Henry Newbolt
Sir Henry John Newbolt, CH (6 June 1862 – 19 April 1938) was an English poet, novelist and historian. He also had a role as a government adviser with regard to the study of English in England. He is perhaps best remembered for his poems "Vitaï Lampada" and "Drake's Drum". Background Henry John Newbolt was born in Bilston, Wolverhampton (then in Staffordshire, but now in the West Midlands), son of the vicar of St Mary's Church, the Rev. Herbert Maitland
Sir Herbert Lethington Maitland (12 November 1868 – 23 May 1923) was an Australian surgeon of the head and neck who was an early specialist in rhinoplasty. Early life Bert Maitland was born at Surry Hills, New South Wales, the son of Duncan Mearns Maitland and Emily, née Dalgety. He attended Newington College (1883–1887) and went up to the University of Sydney in 1888 from whence he graduated as a Bachelor of Medicine and Chirurgery with first-class honours in 1892. Medical career After graduation he became a resident medical officer at Sydney Hospital and in 1893 a senior R.M.O. The following year Maitland began private practice in Elizabeth Street, Sydney and in 1895 he was appointed an honorary assistant surgeon at Sydney. François-Xavier Lemieux (Quebec MLA)
Sir François-Xavier Lemieux (April 9, 1851 – July 18, 1933), often referred to as F.X. Lemieux, was a Quebec lawyer, judge and political figure. He represented Lévis in the Legislative Assembly of Quebec from 1883 to 1892 and Bonaventure from 1894 to 1897. Lemieux was also Louis Riel's lawyer in 1885. He was born at Lévis in 1851 and studied at the college there, at Quebec City and the Université Laval. He articled in law, was called to the Quebec bar in 1872 and became a successful criminal lawyer. In 1874, he married Diane, the daughter of judge Marc-Aurèle Plamondon. Lemieux was the head of Louis Riel's defence team, which included several other leading lawyers from eastern Canada, at his trial for high treason in 1885. Some believe that Riel's lawyers may not have taken advantage of available options for avoiding the death penalty. Sir David Valentine Hennessy (1858–1923) was an Australian politician and Lord Mayor of Melbourne, Victoria. Biography Hennessy was born in Melbourne in 1855 or 15 June 1858. After schooling at the Model High School, Melbourne and Fitzroy College he worked at his father's bakery in Nicholson Street, North Fitzroy. Sir John Gibson (1841–1915) was a journalist who spent most of his career at Aberystwyth as editor of the ''Cambrian News''. His book, ''The Emancipation of Women'', dealt particularly with Wales. Early life Gibson was born in Lancaster on 14 February 1841, the son of a hatter named John Gibson. His mother, Dorothy Gradwell, had worked in a cotton mill before her marriage and appears to have returned to the mills after the death of her husband, another John Gibson. Sir Alfred William Watson KCB FIA (11 March 1870 – 7 May 1936) was a British actuary and civil servant. In 1917 he became Britain's first government actuary and was very influential in setting up the funding by National Insurance for the newly introduced state pension. Early life Watson was born in Bristol on 11 March 1870 to parents Alfred Reuban Watson, a violinist and composer, and Emily Morris Hobro.
