Arhippa Perttunen
Arhippa Perttunen (russian: Архип Иванович Перттунен; Ladvozero village, now a part of the Republic of Karelia 1769 – c. 1841) was a Karelian folk singer. Around 1834, Elias Lönnrot met Perttunen for three days, while on his fifth field trip collecting poems for his Kalevala. Perttunen would have sung in the Karelian dialect, so it was necessary for Lönnrot to make some modifications to make the poems more understandable to Finnish readers. Karelians
Karelians ( krl, karjalaižet, karjalazet, karjalaiset, Finnish: , sv, kareler, karelare, russian: Карелы) are a Finnic ethnic group who are indigenous to the historical region of Karelia, which is today split between Finland and Russia. Karelians living in Russian Karelia are considered a distinct ethnic group closely related to Finnish Karelians, who are considered a subset of Finns. This distinction historically arose from Karelia having been fought over and eventually split between Sweden and Novgorod, resulting in Karelians being under different cultural spheres. In Russia, Karelians mostly live in the Republic of Karelia, where they are the designated ethnic group, and in other adjacent north-western parts of the country. They traditionally speak the Karelian language and are Eastern Orthodox Christians. There are also significant Karelian enclaves in the Tver and Novgorod oblasts, as some Karelians migrated to those areas after the Russo-Swedish War of 1656-16 ...

Finnish Karelians
Karelians (Finnish: ''karjalaiset''), also known as Finnish Karelians or Karelian Finns, are a subgroup (''heimo'') of the Finnish people, traditionally living in Finnish Karelia. A portion of Finnish Karelia was ceded to the Soviet Union following the Winter War. The portion still in Finland comprises the regions of North Karelia, South Karelia, and eastern Kymenlaakso (east of the Kymi River). Over 400,000 Karelians were evacuated to other parts of Finland following the cession, and their descendants are now spread across the country, many still maintaining Karelian identities. Karelians speak eastern dialects of Finnish: in South Karelia and, historically, the Karelian Isthmus the South Karelian dialects are spoken, while the dialects spoken in North Karelia are part of the Savonian dialects. Karelians are traditionally Lutheran Christians. Eastern Kymenlaakso belongs to the historical province of Finnish Karelia, as the Kymi River served as the boundary between the Tavastians ...
