Westover (horse)
Westover (foaled 24 April 2019) is a British Thoroughbred racehorse. He showed promise as a two-year-old in 2021 when he won on his debut and then finished second in both the Haynes, Hanson and Clark Conditions Stakes and the Silver Tankard Stakes. In the following year he won the Sandown Classic Trial and ran third in the Epsom Derby before taking the Irish Derby by seven lengths. Background Westover is a bay colt with a small white star and two white coronets bred in England, by his owner Khalid Abdullah's Juddmonte Farms. Khalid Abdullah died before Westover began his racing career and the horse raced in the ownership of Juddmonte. He was sent into training with Ralph Beckett at Kimpton, Hampshire. Mooresbridge Stakes
The Mooresbridge Stakes is a Group 2 flat horse race in Ireland open to thoroughbreds aged four years or older. It is run over a distance of 1 mile and 2 furlongs (2,012 metres) at the Curragh in early May. History The event is named after Mooresbridge (or "Moore's Bridge"), a bridge close to the racecourse on the Curragh plain. For a period the race held Listed status. It was promoted to Group 3 level in 2003 and upgraded to Group 2 status in 2017. The Mooresbridge Stakes is currently sponsored by Coolmore Stud. Flying Five Stakes
The Flying Five Stakes is a Group 1 flat horse race in Ireland open to thoroughbreds aged three years or older. It is run at the Curragh over a distance of 5 furlongs (1,006 metres), and it is scheduled to take place each year in September during Irish Champions Weekend. History The event was formerly held at Phoenix Park, and it used to be classed at Listed level. For a period it was open to horses aged two or older. It was promoted to Group 3 status in 1988, and transferred to Leopardstown in 1991. The race was moved to the Curragh and upgraded to Group 2 level in 2002. The minimum age of participating horses was raised to three in 2003, and the event reverted to Group 3 status in 2004. Kyprios (foaled 18 May 2018) is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse. He was lightly raced in his early career, winning one race from two starts in each of his first two seasons. As a four-year-old in 2022 he emerged as a top-class stayer, winning the Vintage Crop Stakes and Saval Beg Stakes in Ireland before taking the Ascot Gold Cup, Goodwood Cup, Irish St. Leger and Prix du Cadran. He was one of the best European two-year-olds in 2021 when he was unbeaten in three races, including the Beresford Stakes in Ireland and the Group One Vertem Futurity Trophy in England. The Irish Champion Stakes ( Irish: Curadh-Dhuais na hÉireann) is a Group 1 flat horse race in Ireland open to horses aged three years or older. It is run at Leopardstown over a distance of 1 mile and 2 furlongs (2,012 metres), and it is scheduled to take place each year in September. History The event was established in 1976, and it was initially held at Leopardstown as the Joe McGrath Memorial Stakes. It was named in memory of Joe McGrath (1887–1966), the founder of the Irish Hospitals' Sweepstake and a successful racehorse owner. The race was transferred to Phoenix Park and renamed the Phoenix Champion Stakes in 1984. Leopardstown Racecourse
Leopardstown Racecourse is an Irish horse-racing venue, located in Leopardstown, Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown, 8 km south of the Dublin city centre. Like the majority of Irish courses, it hosts both National Hunt and Flat racing. The course, built by Captain George Quin and modelled on Sandown Park Racecourse in England, was completed in 1888 and acquired by the Horse Racing Board of Ireland in 1967. Many important races are held here and racing takes place all year round, with about 22 meetings per year. In 1941, noted Royal Air Force pilot Hugh Verity, who flew many secret agents at night into and out of farm fields in France, force landed on the Race Course. He was interned briefly before escaping back to England.
