Jennings County is a county located in the U.S. state of Indiana. As of 2020, the population was 27,613. The county seat is Vernon. History Jennings County was formed in 1817. It was named for the first Governor of Indiana and a nine-term congressman, Jonathan Jennings. Jennings was governor when the county was organized. Geography According to the 2010 census, the county has a total area of , of which (or 99.53%) is land and (or 0.47%) is water. Selmier State Forest
Selmier State Forest was established through a donation to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources by Mrs. Frank Selmier, on behalf of her husband Frank. Due to Frank's interest in the outdoors, he planted black locust, pine, black walnut, tulip-tree, and sycamore on many acres from the years of 1921 to 1934. Selmier State Forest The forest includes six short trails. The park does not offer any amenities such as public restrooms, camp sites, or boat ramps. Both fishing and hunting are available however. Miami County, Indiana
Miami County is a county located in the U.S. state of Indiana. As of 2010, the population was 36,903. The county seat is the City of Peru. Miami County is part of the Kokomo-Peru CSA. History Indiana became a state on December 11, 1816, after being Indiana territory for sixteen years. Originally, Indiana was part of the Northwest Territory, which was made up of land gained by the British after the French and Indian War and organized into a territory after the American Revolution. It was after the revolution that settlement in the area by Europeans really began. Knox territory was created in 1790 and included all of present-day Indiana and areas of Illinois. Ancestry's Red Book notes that jurisdiction in Knox territory changed due to Indian uprisings in the area from 1790 to 1810. In 1800, Indiana became the name of a territory. Frances Slocum State Forest is 516 acres of natural land managed by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. Location Located near Kokomo, Peru and Wabash, in Miami County, Indiana. Some nearby attractions include the Mississinewa Reservoir, Asherwood Nature Preserve and Salmonie River State Forest. Roughly triangular, the park runs beside the Mississinewa River. Frances Slocum has 516 acres. Petition to state forest In 2019 a group called Friends of Salamonie Forest asked for the Indiana Natural Resources Commission to designate the Frances Slocum State Forest as a state park along with Salamonie Forest. Wabash County is a county located in the northern central part of the U.S. state of Indiana. As of 2020, the population was 30,976. The county seat is Wabash. History The area was inhabited for thousands of years by cultures of indigenous peoples. French explorers and traders encountered the historical Miami Native Americans beginning in the 17th century. Wabash County, along with Delaware County, was originally formed Jan. 1820 out of the 1818 New Purchase resulting from the Treaty of St. Mary's.
