The High Commissioner of the United Kingdom to Mozambique is the United Kingdom's foremost diplomatic representative in the Republic of Mozambique, and head of the UK's diplomatic mission in Maputo. Mozambique gained independence from Portugal in 1975. From then until 1995 the British heads of mission were ambassadors. In 1996 Mozambique joined the Commonwealth of Nations; Commonwealth countries exchange High Commissioners rather than ambassadors, so since 1996 the heads of mission have been High Commissioners. A diplomat (from grc, δίπλωμα; romanized ''diploma'') is a person appointed by a state or an intergovernmental institution such as the United Nations or the European Union to conduct diplomacy with one or more other states or international organizations. Maeve Fort
Dame Maeve Geraldine Fort (19 November 1940 – 18 September 2008) was a British diplomat. During her posting as the United Kingdom's High Commissioner in South Africa from 1996 to 2000, she was the highest ranking female diplomat in Her Majesty's Diplomatic Service. Early life Born on 19 November 1940 in Liverpool, Fort was the only child of a hospital administrator. She attended Nantwich Grammar School, but left before completing her A-Levels when she discovered that Trinity College, Dublin did not then require entrants to have taken them. She achieved a sufficiently good degree in English and French to gain a scholarship for study at the Sorbonne from the French government. NneNne Iwuji-Eme is a British diplomat. In March 2018, she was appointed to be the High Commissioner of the United Kingdom to Mozambique and took up her post in July 2018 in succession to Joanna Kuenssberg. She is the first black woman to represent the United Kingdom as a high commissioner. Early life and career Iwuji-Eme, who is of Igbo Nigerian heritage, was born in Truro, Cornwall, England, to parents who worked for the United Nations. She was educated at St Felix School, a boarding school in Southwold, Suffolk, from 1990 to 1995. She studied economics at the University of Manchester, and has one son. Joanna Kate Kuenssberg (born 1973) is a British diplomat who was the United Kingdom's High Commissioner to Mozambique from 2014 to 2018. Life and career Kuenssberg was born in Lima, Peru, a daughter of Nick Kuenssberg, a Scottish businessman who was working in Lima at the time, and his wife Sally Robertson. Her younger sister is Laura Kuenssberg, and they have a brother David who is executive director of finance and resources at Brighton and Hove City Council. She was educated at New College, Oxford, where she gained a BA degree in Modern Languages in 1995. She joined the Department of the Environment in 1995 and worked at the European Commission as Project Manager (EU enlargement) 1996–97, after which she joined the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO).
