Haryanvi films are films in the Haryanvi dialect of Hindi. Due to the dominance of the Mumbai-based Hindi film industry, films in Haryanvi were not extensively produced until the 1980s. The First movie of Haryanvi cinema is ''Dharti'', released in 1968. The financial success of Devi Shankar Prabhakar's ''Chandrawal'' (1984) was largely responsible for the continuing production of Haryanvi films, although none have been as successful. Other films such as ''Phool Badan'' and ''Chora Haryane Ka'' followed with only about one out of twelve films being profitable at the box office. In 2000, Aswini Chowdhary won the Indira Gandhi Award for Best Debut Film of a Director at the National Film Awards for the Haryanvi film ''Laddo''. In 2010 the government of Haryana announced they were considering establishing a film board to promote Haryanvi-language films. Haryanvi Language
Haryanvi ( ' or '), also known as Bangru, is an Indo-Aryan language spoken in the state of Haryana in India, and to a lesser extent in Delhi. Haryanvi is considered to be part of the dialect group of Western Hindi, which also includes Khariboli and Braj. It is written in the Devanagari script. In popular culture Bollywood films like Dangal, Sultan, and Tanu Weds Manu: Returns have used the Haryanvi culture and language as the backdrop of their films. These movies have received warm appreciation throughout India and abroad. As a result, some non-native speakers have shown an interest in learning the language. Haryanvi has successfully made its presence count into Indian cinema, TV popular music albums & academia. Jagat Jakhar
Jagat Singh Jakhar (born 6 October 1956) was a Haryanvi film actor. He appeared in a dozen Haryanvi films until his death in 2011. He was the main lead of the largest grossing Haryanvi film, ''Chandrawal'' (1984). Early life He was born in a village of Sundreti in the Jhajjar district of the state Haryana in 1956. His father Surat Singh Jakhar was a farmer. He spent the early years of his life in his village then went to Rohtak to complete his graduation before going to Haryana Agricultural University for higher studies to graduate as a veterinary surgeon. Career Jakhar appeared in around a dozen films during his career. He had most success in the film ''Chandrawal'' where he played a doomed lover. The film went on to break many box office records. Usha Sharma
Usha Sharma is an Indian actress and dancer. She is best known for playing the title character in the Haryanvi film ''Chandrawal''. She serves as the president of Haryana Kala Parishad (The Haryana Arts Council) and is an executive member of Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee. Life and career Sharma was born in Haryana, India. From an early age she learned classical and folk dance, studying with Birju Maharaj, Kundan Lal Gangani and Maya Rao. During primary school she danced for Jawaharlal Nehru. Sharma married poet Devi Shankar Prabhakar who later decided to become a film producer. He wrote the script for the 1984 film ''Chandrawal'' and cast his wife as the leading lady. Sharma also choreographed the film, drawing on her dance training. The film was a financial success, and remains the highest grossing Haryanvi film to date.
