It includes alumni of the historical Fort Street Boys' High School, Fort Street Girls' High School, Fort Street Superior Public School and Fort Street Model School (or Fort Street National School), from which Fort Street Public School also descends. Fort Street High School
Fort Street High School (FSHS) is a Education in Australia#Government schools, government-funded Mixed-sex school, co-educational Selective school (New South Wales), academically selective secondary school, secondary day school, located in Petersham, New South Wales, Petersham, an Inner West (Sydney), inner western suburb of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. Established in 1849, it is the oldest government high school in Australia and, notably, the first school not founded by a religious organisation. Today, it remains a public school operated by the New South Wales Department of Education. As an academically selective secondary school, it draws students from across Sydney, greater metropolitan Sydney. To avoid confusion arising from the school's history of separation, consolidation (business), amalgamation and relocation, the present school is designated Fort Street High School, Petersham for official government purposes. Ivan Black
Ivan Carlisle Black (6 July 1913 – 8 July 1990) was an Australian politician and a member of the Liberal Party. He was a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1945 until 1962. Black was born in Ryde, New South Wales. He was the son of a mechanical engineer and was educated at Fort Street High School and the University of Sydney. He graduated in Law and was called to the Bar in 1939. During World War 2, Black served with the Royal Australian Naval Volunteer Reserve in the English Channel and North Sea. He was a prisoner of war in Germany between 1942 and 1945. Black was elected to the New South Wales Parliament as the member for Neutral Bay at a by-election caused by the death of the party leader, Reg Weaver. Rodney Cavalier
Rodney Mark Cavalier (born 11 October 1948) is a former Australian politician, statutory officer and author. Cavalier was a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly representing Fuller between 1978 and 1981 and then Gladesville between 1981 and 1988 for the Labor Party. During his term in parliament, Cavalier was Minister for Energy, Minister for Finance, and Minister for Education in the Wran and Unsworth governments. Premier Of New South Wales
The premier of New South Wales is the head of government in the state of New South Wales, Australia. The Government of New South Wales follows the Westminster Parliamentary System, with a Parliament of New South Wales acting as the legislature. The premier is appointed by the governor of New South Wales, and by modern convention holds office by his or her ability to command the support of a majority of members of the lower house of Parliament, the Legislative Assembly. Before Federation in 1901 the term "prime minister of New South Wales" was also used. Joseph Carruthers
Sir Joseph Hector McNeil Carruthers (21 December 185710 December 1932) was an Australian politician who served as Premier of New South Wales from 1904 to 1907. Carruthers is perhaps best remembered for founding the Liberal and Reform Association, the forerunner to the modern Liberal Party of Australia (New South Wales Division). Zachary Gorman has argued that Carruthers played a central role in re-orientating Australian liberalism to sit on the centre-right of the political divide, influencing political developments at both the Federal and State level. According to Percival Serle, few premiers of New South Wales succeeded in doing so much distinguished work. Supreme Court Of New South Wales
The Supreme Court of New South Wales is the highest state court of the Australian State of New South Wales. It has unlimited jurisdiction within the state in civil matters, and hears the most serious criminal matters. Whilst the Supreme Court is the highest New South Wales court in the Australian court hierarchy, an appeal by special leave can be made to the High Court of Australia. In the United Kingdom and in some Commonwealth of Nations, Commonwealth countries, a King's Counsel (Post-nominal letters, post-nominal initials KC) during the reign of a king, or Queen's Counsel (post-nominal initials QC) during the reign of a queen regnant, queen, is a lawyer (usually a barrister or advocate) who is typically a senior trial lawyer. Technically appointed by the monarch of the country to be one of 'His [Her] Majesty's Counsel learned in the law', the position originated in England and Wales. John Bryson (Australian Jurist)
John Edgar Bryson (born July 24, 1943) is the former United States Secretary of Commerce, the 37th person to hold the post since its establishment in 1913. Prior to this, he served as the chairman, chief executive officer and president of Edison International, the parent company of Southern California Edison and as director of The Boeing Company. He co-founded the Natural Resources Defense Council with fellow Yale alumni in 1970. The Senate confirmed Bryson as Secretary of Commerce by a 74–26 vote on October 20, 2011. He was sworn in on October 21, 2011. Bryson took a leave of absence in June 2012 for medical tests due to seizures that were related to successive hit and run vehicular accidents. Joseph Browne (politician)
Joseph Alexander Browne (25 February 1876 – 11 November 1946) was an Australian politician and judge. He was born at Adelong to farmers Edward and Eliza Jane Browne. He was educated at Grenfell and then at Fort Street High School, then working as a teacher from 1891 to 1903. He worked as a clerk while studying at night, graduating from the University of Sydney in 1904 whereupon he was called to the bar. On 21 January 1909 he married Laura Hannah Amos, with whom he had four children. He specialised in industrial law, and in 1912 was appointed to the New South Wales Legislative Council by the Labor government, although he was not a party member and was not always a reliable Labor vote. Appointed King's Counsel in 1926, he resigned from the Council in 1932 to become Chief Industrial Commissioner. New South Wales Legislative Council
The New South Wales Legislative Council, often referred to as the upper house, is one of the two chambers of the parliament of the Australian state of New South Wales. The other is the Legislative Assembly. Both sit at Parliament House in the state capital, Sydney. It is normal for legislation to be first deliberated on and passed by the Legislative Assembly before being considered by the Legislative Council, which acts in the main as a house of review. The Legislative Council has 42 members, elected by proportional representation in which the whole state is a single electorate. Arthur Bridges
Arthur Dalgety Bridges, (19 November 1901 – 22 May 1968) was an Australian Chartered accountant, company director and politician. He was a member of the New South Wales Legislative Council for the 22 years from 1946 to 1968 representing the Liberal Party, becoming Leader of the New South Wales Opposition in the Legislative Council from 1962 until 1965. He served as Leader of the Government in the council as well as on the Askin cabinet as Vice-President of the Executive Council and Minister for Child and Social Welfare from 1965 to his death in office in 1968.
