Fitzroy Football Club
The Fitzroy Football Club is an Australian rules football club currently competing in the Victorian Amateur Football Association (VAFA). Formed in 1883 to represent the inner-Melbourne municipality of Fitzroy, the club was a member of the Victorian Football Association (VFA), before becoming a foundation member of the breakaway Victorian Football League (VFL/AFL) in 1897. Fitzroy won a total of eight VFL premierships, of which seven (1898, 1899, 1904, 1905, 1913, 1916 and 1922) were won whilst they were nicknamed the Maroons and one (1944) as the Gorillas. The decision of the club to change its nickname to the Lions in 1957 coincided with what history now records as the beginning of decades of poor on-field performance and financial losses that eventually resulted in the club being placed into administration, ultimately leaving the AFL at the end of the 1996 season. Geoff Moriarty
Geoffrey John Moriarty (28 October 1871 – 29 October 1948) was an Australian rules footballer who played for the Fitzroy Football Club in the VFA and Victorian Football League (VFL). The father of Fitzroy full-forward Jack Moriarty, Geoff played at the opposite end of the ground, and after a year with Carlton, he crossed to Fitzroy, becoming a premiership winning fullback. He was a member of Fitzroy premiership sides in 1895 in the VFA, and in 1899 and 1905, also playing in their losing Grand Finals in 1900 and 1906. Bill Cleary (Australian Footballer)
William 'Bice' Cleary (20 February 1868 – 27 January 1942) was an Australian rules footballer who played for the Fitzroy Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Cleary came from South Ballarat, and after two seasons crossed to Fitzroy. He was vice captain in 1894–1896, and after Tom Banks retired, was 28 when he captained Fitzroy in the inaugural VFL season. Stan Reid
Stanley Spencer Reid (12 July 1872 – 23 June 1901) was an Australian rules footballer with the Fitzroy Football Club from 1894 to 1898. Soon after his retirement from VFL football, he became an ordained minister of the Presbyterian Church. He also, later, became a member of the Imperial Forces in the Anglo-Boer War, firstly as a trooper in the Second Western Australian (Mounted Infantry) Contingent (2WAMI) in 1900, and then as a commissioned officer in the Sixth Western Australian (Mounted Infantry) Contingent (6WAMI) in 1901. He died in active service in the Anglo-Boer War. Early life Stanley Spencer Reid was the third child of Rev. John Bentley Reid (1843–1910) and Sibyl Rose Reid, née Drury (1849–1943). Paddy Noonan
Patrick Thomas "Paddy" Noonan (4 September 1875 – 27 January 1935) was an Australian rules footballer who played for the Fitzroy Football Club and Carlton Football Club in the Victorian Football League. Football A small rover, Noonan played in Fitzroy's inaugural VFL season in 1897 and then their inaugural premiership side the following year. In 1901 he crossed to Carlton and spent two seasons with the Blues. Noonan spent the rest of his career in the Victorian Football Association (VFA) where he captained North Melbourne to premierships in 1903 and 1904. Noonan also spent some time playing at fellow VFA side Williamstown Football Club. Following North Melbourne's entry to the VFL, Noonan was appointed coach in 1929, where North Melbourne finished last, with their only win coming against Footscray. Alec Sloan
Alexander Barclay Sloan (12 December 1870 – 29 June 1938) was an Australian rules footballer who played for the Fitzroy Football Club in the Victorian Football Association (VFA) and the Victorian Football League (VFL). Sloan was a member of Fitzroy's inaugural premiership team in 1895 and captained the club from 1898 to 1900. He played most of his football at half back and was a premiership-winning captain in 1898 and 1899. This made him not only Fitzroy's first ever VFL premiership captain but also the league's first ever grand final winning captain, with the 1897 flag having been decided on a round robin system.
