Philippine Comics
Comics in the Philippines ( fil, Komiks}) have been widespread and popular throughout the country from the 1920s to the present. Komiks were partially inspired by American mainstream comic strips and comic books during the early 20th century. The medium first became widely popular after World War II. Its mainstream appeal subsided somewhat during the latter part of the 20th century with the advent of other mass-media forms such as telenovelas, but experienced a renaissance in the mid-2010s with the increasing popularity of artists such as Gerry Alanguilan, Arnold Arre, Budjette Tan, Kajo Baldisimo, and the rise of fan communities through comic book conventions such as komikon. Webcomics produced by independent Filipino web-based artists have caught the attention of local and foreign readers. Mar Amongo
Mar Amongo (October 9, 1936 – August 10, 2005) was a Filipino comics artist and illustrator. Amongo was born in Santa Cruz, Manila, Philippines. His first stint was with Manlapaz Publishing, where he inked the very first Noli Me Tangere comics novel. After studying with cartoonist Nestor Redondo, he had a fruitful career illustrating "komiks" in his native country. Ronnie Del Carmen
Ronnie del Carmen (born December 31, 1959) is a Filipino animation writer, director, story artist, story supervisor and production designer. He co-directed and was one of the story writers for the 2015 Pixar film '' Inside Out'', for which he was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. He was the story supervisor on Pixar's tenth full-length computer-animated film, '' Up'' and directed its accompanying short film, '' Dug's Special Mission''. Ernie Chan
Ernesto Chan (July 27, 1940 – May 16, 2012), born and sometimes credited as Ernie Chua, was a [-Filipino]-Americans, American comics artist, known for work published by Marvel Comics and DC Comics, including many Marvel issues of series featuring Conan the Barbarian (comics), Conan the Barbarian. Chan also had a long tenure on ''Batman (comic book), Batman'' and ''Detective Comics''. Other than his work on Batman, Chan primarily focused on non-superhero characters, staying mostly in the genres of Horror comics, horror, War comics, war, and sword and sorcery. Vicatan
Vincente Doria Catan Jr., known by his pen name Vicatan (1948 – May 13, 2004), was a Filipino comics artist and novelist. Biography Vicente Doria Catan Jr. was born in the Philippines and worked in the studio of artist Nestor Redondo. After several years in the Filipino komiks industry, he began to work for U.S. comics publishers including DC Comics and Warren Publishing. Artist and comics historian Gerry Alanguilan noted that "Probably the closest of all estorRedondo's followers, Vicatan shared the great man's beautifully lush brush strokes but married that style to an ever-so-slightly humorous sensibility." Fred Carrillo
Wilfredo Limbana "Fred" Carrillo (1926–August 2005) was a Filipino comics artist. Biography Fred Carrillo was born in Kalibo, Aklan, Philippines. He began his career drawing propaganda material for the guerrilla movement in Panay during World War II. After the war, he began his career as a professional artist. Carrillo studied fine arts and architecture at the University of Santo Tomas. He worked for DC Comics in the 1970s and 1980s and drew mystery titles such as '' Ghosts'', ''Phantom Stranger'', ''Secrets of Haunted House'', '' The Unexpected'', ''Weird War Tales'', and '' The Witching Hour''. After leaving the comics industry, he worked on various animation projects. Manuel Buising
Manuel "Manny" Buising (May 4, 1951 - May 18, 2020) was a multi-award winning playwright, fictionist and ''komiks'' writer. He studied at the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila and graduated with a degree in Bachelor of Science in Education, Major in Filipino in 1972. He was the official screenplay writer of Fernando Poe Jr. from 1990 until the actor died in 2005. In the same year, his work, "Niños Inocentes," which exposes how minors are used by pedophiles through cybersex or sex videos, often with the knowledge and consent of their own parents, won the teleplay category in Carlos Palanca Awards. He is no stranger to the Palanca awards, in fact, he was won numerous first place awards in various fields ranging from dramatic plays to short stories and even television plays. ''Trese'' () is a Filipino komik series written by Budjette Tan and illustrated by Kajo Baldisimo. It tells the story of Alexandra Trese, a detective who deals with crimes of supernatural origin. Its first issue was published in October 22, 2005, starting off as a niche work which grew in popularity as readers were intrigued first by the first two volumes' focus on Manila's urban legends, and then by the later volumes' development of Alexandra Trese as a character.
