List Of Falkland Islands By-elections
This is a list of by-elections to the Legislative Assembly and the Legislative Council of the Falkland Islands. The Legislative Council of the Falkland Islands was founded on 13 November 1845, originally as an entirely appointed body. The first elections to the council took place in 1949. The Legislative Assembly replaced the Legislative Council with the implementation of the new Constitution on 1 January 2009. The Legislative Assembly consists of eight elected members, five from Stanley and three from Camp. Under section 32(2) of the constitution, if an elected member of the Legislative Assembly vacates their seat for any reason other than a dissolution of the Assembly, there is a by-election to fill the empty seat. The by-election must be held within 70 days of the vacancy occurring, unless the Assembly is due to be dissolved within 126 days. Legislative Assembly Of The Falkland Islands
The Legislative Assembly of the Falkland Islands is the unicameral legislature of the British Overseas Territory of the Falkland Islands. The Legislative Assembly replaced the Legislative Council (which had existed since 1845) when the new Constitution of the Falklands came into force in 2009 and laid out the composition, powers and procedures of the islands' legislature. The Legislative Assembly consists of eight elected members, two ex officio members (the Chief Executive and the Director of Finance), and the Speaker. Although they take part in proceedings, the ex officio members do not have the right to vote in the Legislative Assembly. The Commander British Forces and the Attorney General also have the right to take part in the proceedings of the Legislative Assembly, though again they may not vote. Glenn Ross (politician)
Glenn Ross (born 1964) is a Falkland Islander, Falkland Islands engineer and politician who served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly, Member of the Legislative Assembly of the Falkland Islands, Legislative Assembly for the Stanley constituency from the 2009 Falkland Islands general election, 2009 general election until his June 2011 Stanley by-election, resignation in 2011. In 1979 Ross became an apprentice electrician, he then went on to study at the University of Southampton and New College Durham, becoming a Chartered Engineer in 2006. He married Jan in 1985 with whom he has two daughters. In April 2011 Ross resigned from the Legislative Assembly in order to concentrate on his work at the islands' power station. The politics of the Falkland Islands takes place in a framework of a constitutional monarchy and parliamentary representative democratic dependency as set out by the constitution, whereby the Governor exercises the duties of head of state in the absence of the monarch and the Chief Executive is the head of the Civil Service, with an elected Legislative Assembly to propose new laws, national policy, approve finance and hold the executive to account. The islands, an archipelago in the southern Atlantic Ocean, are a self-governing British overseas territory. West Falkland (constituency)
West Falkland was a constituency of the Legislative Council of the Falkland Islands which was in existence from the first elections in the Falklands in 1949 until the 1985 election when the Falkland Islands Constitution came into force, abolishing the constituency. The constituency of West Falkland elected one member to the Legislative Council and consisted of the island of the same name and some neighbouring islands. Jane Cameron National Archives
The Jane Cameron National Archives are the official national archives of the Falkland Islands. Government records in the Falklands were started by the first Governor of the Falkland Islands, Richard Moody, in 1841. The records were initially kept in Stanley Town Hall and the Secretariat Building and remained largely intact, despite fires in 1944 and 1959. In 1989 the Falkland Islands Government created the post of Government Archivist to look after the archives. The inaugural holder of the position was Jane Cameron, who was the granddaughter of a former Governor of the Falklands and a sibling to the Falkland Islands' UK Representative, Sukey Cameron. The archives were moved to a custom made building on Jeremy Moore Avenue in Stanley in 1998. On 26 December 2009 Jane Cameron died from injuries she had sustained the previous month in a car crash while travelling in Argentina. Norma Edwards
Norma Edwards OBE is a Falkland Islands politician. She served for two decades on the Falkland Islands Legislative Council and has been described as a "noted hard-liner" in opposition to Argentine control of the islands. Edwards is a native Falkland Islander, the fourth generation born on the islands. She pursued her early schooling there before leaving for the United Kingdom, where she trained as a nurse. She lived for a time in Portsmouth, England, where her daughters Emma and Rebecca were born, before returning to the Falklands with her family after the 1982 war. She was first elected to the Falkland Islands Legislative Council to represent Stanley in 1985, the first election after the islands' 1985 constitution came into force. She resigned from that post in 1987, and in 1989 she returned to the council as a representative of the Camp constituency, a position she held until her retirement in 2005. Jan Cheek
Janet Lynda Cheek (née Biggs; born 1948) is a Falkland Islands politician who served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly for the Stanley constituency from 2009 to 2017. Cheek won re-election in 2013 but stepped down from the assembly at the 2017 election. She was previously a Member of the Legislative Council from 1997 to 2005. Jan Cheek was born in Stanley and spent much of her childhood in South Georgia. For her A-Levels she was awarded a government scholarship to a study at a grammar school in Dorset. Cheek worked as a Secondary School English teacher from 1969 until 1989. She then moved to Fortuna Ltd. where she rose to become co-owner and director until her retirement in 2008. Cheek married fellow islander John Cheek (1939–1996) in 1968, with whom she had two children, Miranda and Ros. She then became a grandmother to Hamish(2004), Flora(2005) and Tom(2011). James Peck (artist)
James Peck (born 1968) is an artist and writer born in the Falkland Islands who held both Argentine and British citizenship. He renounced his Argentine citizenship in 2015 and returned to live in the Falklands in 2016. Peck was born in the island's capital, Stanley, and is the fourth generation of his family living in the islands. His family is of English, Scottish and Irish descent. James is the youngest of three brothers. His father, Terry Peck, was the former chief of police in the islands and fought on the British side in the Falklands War in the Battle of Mount Longdon. James' artistic work features the Falklands War reflecting the suffering of individual soldiers particularly the Argentine conscripts. Whilst exhibiting in Buenos Aires he met and befriended Miguel Savage, an Argentine Veteran of the Falklands War.
