FIS Nordic World Ski Championships
The FIS Nordic World Ski Championships is a biennial nordic skiing event organized by the International Ski Federation (FIS). The World Championships was started in 1925 for men and opened for women's participation in 1954. World Championship events include nordic skiing's three disciplines: cross-country skiing, ski jumping, and nordic combined (the latter being a combination sport consisting of both cross-country and ski jumping). From 1924 to 1939, the World Championships were held every year, including the Winter Olympics. After World War II, the World Championships were held every four years from 1950 to 1982. Since 1985, the World Championships have been held in odd-numbered years. History The International Ski Federation arranged annual Rendezvous races from 1925 to 1927 and annual FIS races from 1929 to 1935. Olaf Hoffsbakken
Olaf Hoffsbakken (2 September 1908 – 23 November 1986) was a Norwegian Nordic skier who competed in the 1930s. He won two silver medals at the 1936 Winter Olympics in Garmisch-Partenkirchen in both the Nordic combined and the 4 × 10 km relay. In addition, he won a complete set of medals at the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships. This included a gold in the Nordic combined (1938), a silver in the 4 × 10 km relay (1935), and a bronze in the 18 km (1935). Hoffsbakken won the Holmenkollen ski festival's Nordic combined event twice (1936 and 1939). Oddbjørn Hagen
Oddbjørn Hagen (3 February 1908 – 25 June 1983) was a Norwegian skier who competed in nordic combined and cross-country skiing. He was both Olympic and World champion. Olympic Games At the 1936 Winter Olympics, Hagen won one gold in the Nordic combined and two silvers in cross-country skiing. The cross-country relay event saw its first Olympic appearance in 1936. Hagen had the first leg, and finished his leg one minute ahead of Finland's Sulo Nurmela, with Sweden's John Berger fifteen seconds further behind. Kalle Jalkanen on the final leg secured Finland the relay victory, six seconds before the Norwegian team. The 18 kilometre cross-country skiing race was also the first part of the Nordic combined. Klaes Karppinen (also spelled Klaus; 9 October 1907 – 24 January 1992) was a Finnish cross-country skier who competed in the 1930s. He won a gold medal at the 1936 Winter Olympics in Garmisch-Partenkirchen in the 4 × 10 km relay. Karppinen was born in Iisalmi, Finland. Martti Lappalainen
Martti Eemil Lappalainen (11 April 1902 – 6 October 1941) was a Finnish cross-country skier and biathlete. Biography He was born in Liperi and was killed in action in Mäntysova, East Karelia. Lappalainen was a part of the Military patrol for Finland that took silver in the 1924 Winter Olympics. He won the 50 km cross-country skiing event at Holmenkollen ski festival in 1928. As a result of this victory, he became the second non-Norwegian winner of any event run up to that point, behind fellow Finn Anton Collin, who won the 50 km event in 1922. At the 1928 Winter Olympics he finished seventh in the 18 km event and ninth in the 50 km event. Four years later he finished fourth in the 18 km event at the 1932 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York. He also participated in the 50 km event but did not finish. Sulo Nurmela
Sulo Nurmela (13 February 1908 – 13 August 1999) was a Finnish cross-country skier. He won a gold medal at the 1936 Winter Olympics in the 4 × 10 km relay and served as the Finnish flag bearer at those games. Nurmela won two world titles in 1934: in the individual 18 km and 4 × 10 km relay events. Väinö Liikkanen
Väinö Liikkanen (1 November 1903 – 15 October 1957) was a Finnish cross-country skier who competed in the 1932 Winter Olympics. He won a silver medal in the 50 km and finished ninth in the 18 km event. He also won two medals at the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships with a gold in the 4 × 10 km relay in 1935 and a bronze in the 18 km in 1933; in 1933 he also placed fourth over 50 km, despite winning the 50 km race at the national championships. Nils-Joel Englund
Nils-Joel Englund (7 April 1907 – 22 June 1995) was a Swedish cross-country skier who competed in the 1930s. He won a bronze medal in 50 km at the 1936 Winter Olympics in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Englund also won six medals at the Nordic skiing World Championships, earning three golds (4 × 10 km relay and 18 km: 1933, 50 km: 1935), one silver (50 km: 1934), and two bronzes (4 × 10 km relay: 1934, 1935).
