European Athletics Championships
The European Athletics Championships is a biennial (from 2010) athletics event organised by the European Athletics Association and is recognised as the elite continental outdoor athletics championships for Europe. Editions First held, for men only, in 1934 in Turin, and separately for women for the first time in Vienna in 1938, the Championships took place every four years following the end of the World War II, with the exception of the 1969 and 1971 editions, becoming a joint men's and women's competition from the third edition in 1946 in Oslo. Since 2010, they have been organised every two years, and when they coincide with the Summer Olympics, the marathon and racewalking events are not contested. From 2016, a half-marathon event has been held in those Olympic years, and both the marathon and half-marathon events held as part of the Championships also function as the principle European elite team events at those distances. Heather Armitage
Heather Joy Armitage (later ''Young'', then ''McClelland;'' born 17 March 1933) is a British retired sprinter and British record holder for the 100 yards. Sporting career Armitage won her first major title representing Yorkshire in the all England schools 100 yards in 1951 aged 18. She competed in the 1952 and 1956 Olympics in the 100 m, 200 m and 4×100 m events and won two medals in the relay. Her best individual achievement was sixth place in the 100 m in 1956. In 1958, she won three medals at the 1958 Commonwealth Games in Cardiff including as the anchor in the English 4 × 110 yards relay team alongside Madeleine Weston, June Paul and anchor Dorothy Hyman that won the gold medal and set a new world record of 45.37 seconds in the process. Wilma Van Den Berg
Wilhelmina Catharina Maria Martina "Wilma" van Gool (née van den Berg on 11 August 1947, commonly known as Wilma van den Berg) is a Dutch former sprinter, two-time Olympian, silver medalist in the European Championships and Universiade, Dutch national champion, and 1969 Dutch Female Athlete of the Year. Biography She won the Dutch national championship in both the 100 m event and the 200 m in 1967, 1969-72, and 1976; she also won the 100 m event in 1974. She won a silver medal at the 1969 European Championships in the 100 m event, and a bronze medal at the 1970 European Indoor Championships in the 60 m. Petra Vogt
Petra Kandarr ( née Vogt; 20 August 1950 in Halle – 12 March 2017 in Karlsruhe) was an East German sprinter who specialized in the 100- and 200-metre track events. Biography At the 1969 European Championships she won gold medals in both the 100 m and 200 m as well as a gold medal in 4x100 metres relay together with teammates Bärbel Podeswa, Renate Meißner and Regina Höfer. For this achievement she was selected as the ''DDR Sportswoman of the Year''. At the 1971 European Championships she won a silver medal in relay together with teammates Karin Balzer, Renate Stecher and Ellen Stropahl. Kandarr then won a silver medal in 60 metres at the 1973 European Indoor Championships, behind Annegret Richter of West Germany. She competed for the club SC Chemie Halle during her active career. 1969 European Athletics Championships
The 9th European Athletics Championships were held from 16–21 September 1969 in the Karaiskaki Stadium of Athens, the capital of Greece. New at these championships were the women's 1500 metres and the women's 4×400 metres relay event. Moreover, women's 80 metres hurdles was replaced by women's 100 metres hurdles. Contemporaneous reports on the event were given in the Glasgow Herald. Former East German runner Jürgen May, who had defected, was not allowed to compete for his new country, West Germany, due to IAAF rules requiring him to live there for at least three years; he had competed for East Germany in the 1966 championships. West German officials promptly withdrew their athletes from all individual events in protest, but decided to compete in the relay races as a symbolic gesture to show their respect for the Greek organisers. Irena Szewińska
Irena Szewińska (née Kirszenstein; Polish pronunciation: ; 24 May 1946 – 29 June 2018) was a Polish sprinter who was one of the world's foremost athletes for nearly two decades, in multiple events. She is the only athlete in history, male or female, to have held the world record in the 100 m, the 200 m and the 400 m. Personal life Irena Kirszenstein was born in Leningrad to a Jewish- Polish family. Her father came from Warsaw and mother from Kiev. They met in Samarkand where they studied at the time, and in 1947 moved to Warsaw. In 1967, she married her coach, Janusz Szewiński, who also competed in hurdles at the national level and later worked as a sports photographer. 1966 European Athletics Championships
The 8th European Athletics Championships were held from 30 August to 4 September 1966 in the Nép Stadium in Budapest, Hungary. Contemporaneous reports on the event were given in the Glasgow Herald. A new IAAF ruling was applied for the first time making gender verification for female events mandatory. As a consequence, all women competitors were forced to have a sex check. Teresa Ciepły
Teresa Barbara Ciepły (''née'' Wieczorek; 19 October 1937 – 8 March 2006) was a Polish sprinter and hurdler. She was a bronze Olympic medalist in the 4×100 metre relay at the 1960 Summer Olympics. Two years later she won gold medals in the 4 × 100 m relay (in European record time of 44.5 seconds) and the 80 m hurdles, and a bronze medal in the 100 m sprint at the 1962 European Championships. The same year she was chosen as the Polish Sportspersonality of the year. At the 1964 Olympics she won a gold medal in the 4 × 100 m relay, in a world record time of 43.6 seconds, and a silver in the 80 m hurdles. Jutta Heine
Judith "Jutta" Heine (; born 16 September 1940) is a retired West German sprinter. She competed in the 200 metres and 4 × 100 metres relay events at the 1960 and 1964 Olympics and won two silver medals in 1960. In 1964 she finished fifth in the relay and was disqualified in the 200 m heats for false starts. In 1962 Heine won one gold and two silver medals at the European Championships and was selected as West German Sportswoman of the Year. Domestically she held West German national titles in 200 m (1959 and 1961–63), 100 m (1962) and pentathlon (1960 and 1962). Dorothy Hyman
Dorothy Hyman (born 9 May 1941) is a retired English sprinter. She competed at the 1960 and 1964 Summer Olympics in the 100 m, 200 m and 4 × 100 m events, winning three medals. She also won individual 100 m gold and 200 m silver at the 1962 European Championships in Belgrade and, representing England, completed the 100 yd/220 yd sprint double at the 1962 Commonwealth Games. Winner of the 1963 BBC Sports Personality of the Year award, she has a stadium in her home village of Cudworth named in her honour. In 2011, she was inducted into the England Athletics Hall of Fame.
