Essendon Football Club
The Essendon Football Club, nicknamed the Bombers, is a professional Australian rules football club. The club plays in the Australian Football League (AFL), the game's premier competition. The club was formed by the McCracken family in their Ascot Vale, Victoria, Ascot Vale home "Alisa", and while the exact date is unknown, it is generally accepted to have been in 1872. The club’s first recorded game took place on 7 June 1873 against a Carlton Second 20. From 1878 until 1896, the club played in the Victorian Football Association then joined seven other clubs in October 1896 to form the breakaway Victorian Football League (later changed to AFL in 1990). Headquartered at the Essendon Recreation Ground, known as Windy Hill, from 1922 to 2013, the club moved to The Hangar in near Tullamarine in late 2013 on land owned the Melbourne Airport. Percy Ogden
Percival Gordon Ogden (24 February 1886 – 13 July 1967) was an Australian rules footballer who played with and coached Essendon in the Victorian Football League (VFL). A rover, Ogden started his career with Collingwood in 1905. He played just four games with the club before moving to Association team Preston and did not return to the VFL until 1910 with Essendon. Ogden was a member of Essendon's back-to-back premiership wins in 1911 and 1912. After Essendon disbanded during the Great War, Ogden was captain-coach of Preston (then in junior ranks) in 1916–17 before returning when Essendon resumed in 1918. He spent 1919 as captain and the following two were as captain-coach. Ogden effectively retired from League ranks and was captain-coach of Northcote (where he lived) in 1922. Dick Reynolds
Richard Sylvannus Reynolds (20 June 1915 – 2 September 2002) was an Australian rules footballer who played for the Essendon Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Reynolds is one of four footballers to have won three Brownlow Medals, the others being Haydn Bunton Sr., Bob Skilton and Ian Stewart. Revered by Essendon supporters, he was often referred to simply as "King Richard". Len Webster
Len Webster (26 December 1906 – 7 October 1985) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Essendon in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Webster, a fireman by profession, was a ruckman for Blackwood Forest and Loch before joining Essendon. He had an early setback in 1930 when he required surgery to remove cartilage in his knee but recovered well enough to play 15 of a possible 18 games in 1931. Jack Baggott
John Henry Baggott (20 July 1906 – 2 June 1995) was an Australian rules footballer who played and coached in the Victorian Football League (VFL) between 1927 and 1940 for the Richmond Football Club, Essendon Football Club, and South Melbourne Football Club. Career in football Baggott represented the Richmond Football Club between 1927 and 1935. He was Richmond's leading goal kicker in his debut year of 1927 with 37 goals, and again in 1928 with 61 goals. In Round 9 of the 1928 season he kicked a then club record 12 goals against South Melbourne, the first Richmond player to ever hit double figures in goal-kicking in a game. He placed third in the League's best and fairest award, the Brownlow Medal in that same year, and was also named in the Victorian state representative team in both 1928 and 1929. Keith Forbes
Keith MacKenzie Forbes (28 May 1906 – 7 September 1996) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for Coburg in the Victorian Football Association (VFA), and for Essendon, North Melbourne (as captain-coach), and Fitzroy in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Family The son of Donald Forbes, and Sarah Jane Forbes, née MacPhail, Keith MacKenzie Forbes was born on 28 May 1906. He married Dorothy Viola Brown on 25 November 1935. Football A small goalkicking rover, he stood at 171 cm. Coburg (VFA) Forbes played a total of 30 games for Coburg over three seasons (1926–1928), and was part of the 1927 premiership team. Garnet Campbell
Harry Garnet Campbell (31 July 1903 – 21 January 1981) was an Australian rules footballer who played for and coached Essendon in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Football Campbell, noted for his strong disposal skills and pace, was best suited as either a centreman or winger. Essendon won Grand Finals in his first two seasons, but he was not a member of their premiership sides, finding it hard to break into the team initially. He was a regular from 1925 onwards and in the 1926 Brownlow Medal count finished as Essendon's highest vote getter and equal fifth overall. Campbell, who represented Victoria at the 1927 Melbourne Carnival, was appointed captain-coach of Essendon in 1931 but his stint and VFL career ended in 1933 when they finished with the wooden spoon. Francis William Maher (22 September 1895 – 7 November 1976) was a decorated Australian soldier who served in the First AIF, and was an Australian footballer and coach in the Victorian Football League (VFL) and the Victorian Football Association (VFA). Family The son of Cornelius Maher (1865–1934), and Mary Jane Maher (1869–1943), née Walmsley, Francis William Maher was born in Camberwell, Victoria, on 22 September 1895. He married Harriet Louise "Ettie" Benyan (1899–1979) in 1920. Military service Maher served in the First AIF as a machine gunner from 1916 to 1919. Enlisted as a private, and holding the rank of Lieutenant at his discharge from service, he was awarded the Military Medal for gallantry in May 1918 for his actions in France during the Battle of Broodseinde in October 1917.
