East Bengal FC is an Indian association football club based in Kolkata, West Bengal, which competes in the top tier of Indian football. The club was formed in August 1920 when the Jorabagan Club's vice-president, Suresh Chandra Chaudhuri, resigned. He did so after the club sent out their starting eleven with the notable exclusion of defender Sailesh Bose, who was dropped from the squad for undisclosed reasons when they were about to face Mohun Bagan in the Coochbehar Cup semi-final on 28 July 1920. He, along with Raja Manmatha Nath Chaudhuri, Ramesh Chandra Sen and Aurobinda Ghosh, formed East Bengal on 1 August 1920. East Bengal started playing in the Calcutta Football League, 2nd division, in 1921. In 1925, they qualified for the first division for the first time and since then they have won many Indian football titles. East Bengal Club, commonly referred to as East Bengal (), is an Indian professional multi-sport club based in Kolkata, West Bengal. It is best known for its professional men's football team that competes in the Indian Super League, the top flight of the Indian football. Pansanttom Venkatesh
Pansanttom Venkatesh (1926 – 1 June 1977) was an Indian footballer. Venkatesh played for East Bengal and the India national football team during his professional career. Club career Venkatesh spent most of his club career in East Bengal, and captained the team in 1952–53. He was part of the team that played against German side Kickers Offenbach and FC Torpedo Moscow in 1953. He also scored two goals against Torpedo in their 3–3 draw at the Central Dynamo Stadium. With East Bengal from 1948 to 1953, he scored overall 81 goals, and emerged as top scorer in 1953. In the same year, he represented the club at the World Youth Festival in Romania. Bikash Panji is a retired Indian professional football midfielder who played for India. Playing career Panji represented India at the 1984 Asian Cup. Tarun Dey is a retired Indian football defender who represented India at the 1984 Asian Cup. He also played for East Bengal Club and was awarded the Man of the tournament of the 1985 ''Coca Cola Cup''. Dey is also a qualified AFC coach and managed East Bengal youth team as assistant coach. Bhaskar Ganguly is a former Indian football goalkeeper from West Bengal. He was the captain of India national football team which participated in the 1982 Asian Games held in New Delhi. Monoranjan Bhattacharya, nicknamed ''Mona'', is a retired Indian professional footballer and football manager. During his playing career, he represented the "Big Two" of Kolkata football, East Bengal and Mohun Bagan. He also represented India in various international tournaments between 1978 and 1989. Prasanta Banerjee
Prasanta Banerjee is an Indian football midfielder who played for India national football team in the 1984 Asian Cup. He is one of the few players who has captained and won trophies in all three big clubs viz. East Bengal, Mohun Bagan, and Mohammedan Sporting. Playing career He started his career at Kalighat in 1975. He joined East Bengal in 1976, and captained the team in 1979–80. Later he joined Mohammedan Sporting followed by Mohun Bagan. Surajit Sengupta
Surajit Sengupta (30 August 1951 – 17 February 2022) was an Indian footballer who played as a winger. He played for the India national team, representing the country in the 1974 Asian Games in Tehran and the 1978 Asian Games in Bangkok. In a domestic career spanning twelve years between 1971 and 1983, he had represented all three of Calcutta's football clubs, Mohun Bagan FC, East Bengal FC, and Mohammedan Sporting FC, and was considered one of the finest forwards of his time. Gautam Sarkar, also spelt as Goutam Sarkar, and known by the nickname "Indian Beckenbauer" (born 8 January 1950), is a former Indian Bengali international footballer and football coach from West Bengal. Peter Thangaraj
Havildar Peter Thangaraj (24 December 1935 – 24 November 2008) was an Indian football player and a non-commissioned officer in the Indian Army. Thangaraj played for the Indian national side at the 1956 Melbourne and 1960 Rome Olympics. He was voted Asia's best goalkeeper in 1958. Thangaraj was a recipient of Arjuna Award for the year 1967. Thangaraj played domestic club football for both the Calcutta Football League clubs Mohun Bagan and East Bengal. Prasanta Sinha was an Indian association football player who represented India internationally, and played club football for East Bengal. Playing career He was part of the India national team that finished as runners-up at the 1964 AFC Asian Cup in Israel. Sukumar Samajpati (born 1939) was an Indian professional footballer. He played predominantly as a forward, and was part of the Indian squad that finished runners-up at the 1964 AFC Asian Cup in Israel.
