In 2005, series 1 of ''Doctor Who'' was released on Universal Media Disc (UMD) format in four parts. The first part of series 4 also received a UMD release in 2009. They are only playable on Sony's PlayStation Portable The PlayStation Portable (PSP) is a handheld game console developed and marketed by Sony Computer Entertainment. Doctor Who (series 1)
The first series of the 2005 revival of the British science fiction programme ''Doctor Who'' began on 26 March 2005 with the episode "Rose". This marked the end of the programme's 16-year absence from episodic television following its cancellation in 1989, and was the first new televised ''Doctor Who'' story since the broadcast of the television movie starring Paul McGann in 1996. The finale episode, "The Parting of the Ways", was broadcast on 18 June 2005. This is a list of ''Doctor Who'' serials and episodes that have been released on DVD and Blu-ray. DVD Release Most ''Doctor Who'' DVDs have been released first in the United Kingdom with Region 2, and released later in Australia and New Zealand ( Region 4) and in North America ( Region 1). Aside from differences in the external packaging, special features and commentaries are mostly identical in all versions. All Region 1 releases prior to September 2005 included a "Who's Who" feature that identified key cast members and gave brief biographies and filmographies. The Region 1 releases of '' The Robots of Death'', '' The Ark in Space'', '' The Talons of Weng-Chiang'', and '' Pyramids of Mars'' also include a featurette with the syndicated Time Life introductions and closings narrated by Howard da Silva. "The Fires of Pompeii" is the second episode of the fourth series of the British science fiction television series ''Doctor Who''. It was broadcast on BBC One on 12 April 2008.
