Czech Republic
The Czech Republic, or simply Czechia, is a landlocked country in Central Europe. Historically known as Bohemia, it is bordered by Austria to the south, Germany to the west, Poland to the northeast, and Slovakia to the southeast. The Czech Republic has a hilly landscape that covers an area of with a mostly temperate continental and oceanic climate. The capital and largest city is Prague; other major cities and urban areas include Brno, Ostrava, Plzeň and Liberec. The Duchy of Bohemia was founded in the late 9th century under Great Moravia. It was formally recognized as an Imperial State of the Holy Roman Empire in 1002 and became a kingdom in 1198. Following the Battle of Mohács in 1526, the whole Crown of Bohemia was gradually integrated into the Habsburg monarchy. The Protestant Bohemian Revolt led to the Thirty Years' War. Vincenc Beneš
Vincenc Beneš (22 January 1883 – 27 March 1979) was a Czech painter. Early life and education Beneš was born in Lišice, Hradec Králové. He studied at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague from 1902 to 1904 and the Academy of Fine Arts, Prague from 1904 to 1907. Career From 1909 to 1911, and again from 1917 to 1949 he was a member of the Mánes Union of Fine Arts. His style was initially influenced by cubism and fauvism, and he later formed realistic oil paintings, showing the effect of Neo-Classicism. He contributed to the ''Art Monthly'' periodical. Among his most important works include a series of landscapes for the National Theatre and some battlefields in France. In 1963 he was named a National Artist. Death He died in 1979 in Prague. Václav Brožík
Václav Brožík (french: Vaclav de Brozik ; 6 March 1851, Třemošná – 15 April 1901 Paris) was a Czech painter who worked in the academic style. Life He came from a poor family, studying lithography and porcelain painting through apprenticeships. Beginning in 1868, with financial assistance from a local landowner, he was able to attend the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. He made a trip to the Netherlands, where he studied the Old Masters, then settled in Paris (despite not being able to speak French), where a letter of recommendation assured him the support of Jaroslav Čermák. Jaroslav Brožek
Dr. Jaroslav Brožek, CSc. (6 February 1923, in Kněževes – 22 January 2019) was a Czech artist and professor of art, theorist in color theory, art teaching and methodologies. He authored a number of publications about color and its effects on human perception, and together with other authors he prepared textbooks for primary schools as well as art schools in the Czech Republic. Life He attended a gymnasium in Jevíčko and Boskovice. Impressed by his teacher Bohdan Lacina, he decided to dedicate his life to art and education. In Prague, he studied art oriented at education at the Faculty of Education, Charles University in Prague in Cyril Bouda's, Martin Salcman's, and Karel Lidický's seminars. Oskar Brázda
Oskar Brázda (30 September 1887 in Rosice – 19 December 1977 in Líčkov) was a Czech painter and artist. Biography Brázda attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and then, through the imperial scholarship, he studied in Italy. In 1915, in Rome, he married Swedish author Amelie Posse. During World War I, he became familiar with Edvard Beneš and actively participated in the first Czechoslovak resistance. The two were even in the years 1915–1916 interned in Alghero, a town on the island of Sardinia. In 1925, the changing political situation saw him leave Italy and return to his homeland. He lived in Líčkov Castle. He died in 1977. In 1989, his second wife Marie opened the Oskar Brázda Gallery in the castle where visitors can see a number of his works and personal belongings. Zdenka Braunerová
Zdislava Rosalina Augusta Braunerová, called Zdenka (9 April 1858, Prague - 23 May 1934, Prague) was a Czech landscape painter, illustrator and graphic artist, whose work was influenced by her connection to Paris. She was the first female member of the Mánes Union of Fine Arts, and a patron of numerous other Czech artists. Biography She was born into a wealthy family. Petr Brandl
Petr Brandl (Peter Johannes Brandl or Jan Petr Brandl) (24 October 1668 – 24 September 1735) was a Czech painter of the late Baroque in the bilingual Kingdom of Bohemia. Brandl was the sixth child in a Czech-German family. His father, Michal Brandl, worked as a tailor and was of German ancestry. Vladimír Boudník
Vladimír Boudník (17 March 1924 in Prague – 5 December 1968 in Prague) was a graphic artist, photographer and a key figure in Czech post-war art, and a representative of the "explosionism" movement. He is best known for his active and structural graphic art, but also created mostly photographic and monotype works that, until recently, remained unknown. Biography During World War II Boudník was sent to forced labor in Germany, an experience that resulted in a lifelong trauma. After the war, he attended art school, where he studied printmaking. He spent a brief period working in advertising before getting a job at an ironworks in Kladno, where he met Bohumil Hrabal. In 1952 Boudník, began working for ČKD Works in Prague. The factory environment served as an inspiration for his "active graphics" made of industrial material and waste. In 1968, Boudník committed suicide while experimenting with asphyxiation. Václav Boštík
Václav Boštík (6 November 1913 – 7 May 2005) was a Czech painter, graphic artist and illustrator. In 1937 he joined the Academy in Prague and from 1942, he was a member of the ''Umělecká beseda'' (Art Forum). In 1960 he became one of the founding members of the UB 12 Group. His early work is much influenced by painters Corot and Cézanne and realism. However, by the late 1950s, he had begun painting abstract art. Later he participated in the restoration of Renaissance artistic work on the facade of Litomyšl castle. In 1991 he was awarded the ''Chevalier de L'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres'' (Knight of the Order of Arts and Letter) by the French government.Karel SRP (2011), Vaclav Bostik, p. 455, Prague, Shortly before his death, in 2004 he received an award from the Minister of Culture and in the same year Medal of Merit from the President of the Czech Republic. Josef Bosáček
Josef Bosáček (17 February 1857 – 5 September 1934 Příbram) was a Czechs, Czech painter and classical graffiti artist. He was a pupil of Gabriel Jakub Wüger, Professor of the Painting Academy in Rome. In 1886, he enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague and studied under Professor František Sequens, Antonín Lhota and Julius Mařák. During his studies, he met Mikoláš Aleš, with whom he collaborated on various frescoes and graffiti on facades in the 1890s. In 1896, 1900, and 1903–1907, he worked for the builder Rudolf Štech in Plzeň. After his brother's (who was a priest) death in 1918, he became a hermit and painted frescoes related to Jesus Christ in a pilgrimage church at Maková hora near Příbram.
