Luis Senarens
Luis Philip Senarens (April 24, 1863 – December 26, 1939) was an American dime novel writer specializing in science fiction, once called "the American Jules Verne". Biography Senarens grew up in a Cuban-American family in Brooklyn. Around 1882, Senarens began writing new stories in the Frank Reade adventure story series begun by Harry Enton in 1868. Senarens introduced Frank Reade, Jr. as the new main character. Senarens added elements such as electricity, airships, and helicopters which resulted in him being called "the American Jules Verne." The stories were very successful, and by the 1890s Senarens was asked by publisher Frank Tousey to write a similar series featuring Jack Wright (fictional character), Jack Wright, the "Boy Inventor". Later in the decade, Tousey created the ''Frank Reade Library'', a periodical devoted to "invention" stories, largely (or wholly) composed by Senarens using the pseudonym Noname. Rafael Campo (poet)
Rafael Campo (born 1964 New Jersey) is an American poet, doctor, and author. Life Rafael Campo is the poetry editor of the Journal of the American Medical Association. He graduated from Amherst College and Harvard Medical School. He formally practiced medicine at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts and was Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. His writing focuses on themes that promote equality and justice for gay people, people of color, and working-class people. He served as a resident poet at Brandeis University and the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. He frequently reads at colleges, including Brown University, Stanford University, and Colby-Sawyer College. Belkis Cuza Malé
Belkis Cuza Malé (born 1942) is a Cuban-American writer, journalist, and painter, best known for her poetry. Biography She studied literature at the University of Santiago de Cuba beginning in December 1964. After marrying her first husband, she moved to Havana and finished her schooling at the University of Havana. In 1965 she gave birth to her daughter María Josefina, "and soon after came the divorce." It was at her first ''alma mater'' that she debuted as a poet, with the book ''El viento en la pared''. This was published thanks to her professor, the Mexican Eraclio Cepeda, for the University of Santiago de Cuba's Department of Public Extension in 1962. That year she competed in Cuba's main literary event with ''Tiempos de sol'', which received honorable mention for the Casa de las Américas Prize. Silvia Curbelo is a Cuban-born, American poet and writer. Nilo Cruz
Nilo Cruz is a Cuban-American playwright and pedagogue. With his award of the 2003 Pulitzer Prize for Drama for his play ''Anna in the Tropics'', he became the second Latino so honored, after Nicholas Dante. Biography Early years Cruz was born in 1960 to Tina and Nilo Cruz, Sr. in Matanzas, Cuba. The family immigrated to Little Havana in Miami, Florida, in 1970 on a Freedom Flight, and eventually naturalised to the United States. His interest in theater began with acting and directing in the early 1980s. He studied theater first at Miami-Dade Community College, later moving to New York City, where Cruz studied under fellow Cuban María Irene Fornés. Fornes recommended Cruz to Paula Vogel who was teaching at Brown University where he would later receive his M.F.A. in 1994. Cruz is openly gay. The Premio Azorín de Novela (Azorín Prize for Best Novel) is one of the most important literary awards for works written in the Spanish language. It was originally created by Spain's Ministry of Information and Tourism in 1970. The modern form of the award was created in 1994, by the Spanish provincial government (diputación) of Alicante together with Editorial Planeta (Planeta Publishing House). The prize honors one of the finest Spanish writers of the so-called "Generation of 98", José Augusto Trinidad Martínez Ruíz (1873-1967), who used to sign his works under the pseudonym of Azorín. The prize is given annually to a non-published and original novel, whose author receives 68.000 € (some 93.000 dollars). As part of the prize, Planeta publishes the awarded novel. Lourdes Casal
Lourdes Casal (April 5, 1938 – February 1, 1981) was an important poet and activist for the Cuban community. She was internationally known for her contributions to psychology, writing, and Cuban politics. Born and raised in Cuba, she sought exile in New York because of Cuban communist rule. Casal received a master's degree in psychology in 1962 and later, a doctorate in 1975 from the New School for Social Research. She wrote the book ''El caso Padilla: literatura y revolucion en Cuba,'' which illustrated the failing relationship between writers and Cuban officials. A year later, she co-founded a journal named ''Nueva Generation'' which focused on creating dialogue on relationships between Cubans living abroad and on the island. Casal earned notoriety by attempting to reconcile Cuban exiles in the United States.
