Throughout its 98-year history, a large number of Soccer Players from the Universitario de Deportes have worn the first team jersey and many of them have represented Peru on their national soccer team. Teodoro Fernández is the maximum idol of the institution, as well as its historical scorer with 156 goals. He is considered one of the best soccer players in the history of Peru. Club Universitario De Deportes
Club Universitario de Deportes, popularly known as Universitario or simply as La "U", is a Peruvian football club located in Lima. The club was founded in 1924 under the name Federación Universitaria by students of the National University of San Marcos but was forced to rename in 1931. Since 1928, the club competes in the top tier of Peruvian football, the Torneo Descentralizado. In 2000, they opened the 85,000-capacity stadium Estadio Monumental, currently the largest stadium in Peru and 5th largest in South America, retiring their smaller Estadio Teodoro Lolo Fernández. Universitario and Alianza Lima participate in the Peruvian Clásico, which has its roots in the club's first participation in the Primera División in 1928. Plácido Reynaldo Galindo Pando''(9 March 1906 – 22 October 1988) was a Peruvian football midfielder who played for Peru in the 1930 FIFA World Cup, where he also became the first ever player sent off in a World Cup match. He also was a player, manager and president of Universitario de Deportes. Universitario de Deportes Plácido Galindo played for Universitario de Deportes from 1924 to 1933. As part of a group of students of the University of San Marcos he founded the then called Federación Universitaria de Fútbol in 1924. The club played friendly matches until it was admitted in the first Peruvian Primera División tournament in 1928, in which it ended as runner up. The next year Galindo and the club won the 1929 Peruvian Primera División. José Francisco Walter Ormeño Arango (3 December 1926 – 4 January 2020) was a Peruvian association football, footballer who played as a Goalkeeper (association football), goalkeeper. Career Born in Lima, Ormeño played for Club Universitario de Deportes, Universitario de Deportes, Huracán de Medellín, Mariscal Sucre, Boca Juniors, Rosario Central, Alianza Lima, Club América, América and Atlante F.C., Atlante.
