Charlotte 49ers Men's Basketball
The Charlotte 49ers men's basketball team represents the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNC Charlotte) in NCAA Division I basketball. The 49ers are charter members of Conference USA. Charlotte returned to C-USA in 2013 after leaving in 2005 to join the Atlantic 10 Conference. The 49ers have also played in the Sun Belt Conference and were a member of the Metro Conference, which merged with the Great Midwest Conference to form Conference USA. The basketball team has spent the better part of its history in the shadow of the state's four Atlantic Coast Conference teams. However, the 49ers have carved out a niche of their own, making 11 appearances in the NCAA tournament. In their first appearance, in 1977, they advanced all the way to the Final Four—at the time, the deepest run for a first-time tournament participant. Ron Sanchez
Ron Sanchez is a Dominican college basketball coach who is the associate head coach for the Virginia Cavaliers men's basketball team. He was most recently the head coach at Charlotte 49ers men's basketball, Charlotte from 2018 until his resignation on June 6, 2023. Playing career Sanchez played collegiately at State University of New York at Oneonta, SUNY Oneonta where he was a two-time State University of New York Athletic Conference, SUNYAC all-conference selection, and SUNYAC Player of the Year for the 1995-96 season. He was inducted into the Red Dragons' athletic hall of fame in 2007. Coaching career After graduation, Sanchez assisted his alma mater for three seasons, before taking an assistant coaching position at State University of New York at Delhi, SUNY Delhi from 1999 to 2001. Lee Rose (basketball)
Lee Hyden Rose (October 23, 1936 – April 5, 2022) was an American basketball coach and college athletic administrator. He served as the head men's basketball at Transylvania University, in an interim capacity in 1964–65 and on a permanent basis from 1968 to 1975; the University of North Carolina at Charlotte from 1975 to 1978; Purdue University from 1978 to 1980; and the University of South Florida from 1980 to 1986, compiling a career college basketball coach record in 388–162. Rose twice coached teams to the Final Four of the NCAA Division I basketball tournament, with Charlotte 49ers in 1977 and the Purdue Boilermakers in 1980. Mike Pratt (basketball)
Michael P. Pratt (August 4, 1948 – June 16, 2022) was an American basketball player and coach. He was a 6'4" (1.93 m), 195 lb (88.5 kg) guard. Born in Dayton, Ohio, Pratt attended Meadowdale High School, graduating in 1966. He then went on to the University of Kentucky where he was a three-year letter winner under legendary coach Adolph Rupp from 1967 through 1970. Following his career with the Wildcats he was selected in the 1970 American Basketball Association draft by the Kentucky Colonels, where he played two seasons and averaged six points per game. Following his playing days he became an assistant coach under Lee Rose at UNC Charlotte (now known athletically as Charlotte), helping the 49ers to reach the 1977 NCAA Final Four. Hal Wissel
Hal Wissel (born February 8, 1939) is an American basketball coach who has worked at the professional and collegiate level in his career. Wissel was an assistant coach for player development with the Golden State Warriors (2006–07), an assistant coach with the Memphis Grizzlies (2002–05), an assistant coach with the New Jersey Nets (1996–99), and an assistant coach with the Atlanta Hawks (1976–77). Wissel was also an advance scout with the Dallas Mavericks (2001–02), Director of Player Personnel with the New Jersey Nets (1995–96), and advance scout and special assignment coach with the Milwaukee Bucks (1990–95). In addition to serving in the NBA, Wissel compiled more than 300 wins as a collegiate head coach. Jeff Mullins (basketball)
Jeffrey Vincent Mullins (born March 18, 1942) is an American retired basketball player and coach. He played college basketball with the Duke Blue Devils and in the National Basketball Association (NBA) with the St. Louis Hawks and Golden State Warriors. Mullins served as the head basketball coach at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte from 1985 to 1996. Playing career Mullins, a native of Lexington, Kentucky, was a very talented 6'4" (1.93 m) forward in high school. After graduation, he attended Duke University from 1960 through 1964, where he averaged 21.9 points per game for his career. His no. 44 Duke jersey was retired in 1994. Melvin Watkins
Melvin Lenzo Watkins (born November 15, 1954) is an American college basketball coach and former player. He has also been the associate head coach at the University of Missouri. He served as interim head coach during the end of the 2006 season, but returned to his former position when new coach Mike Anderson was hired. Bobby Lutz (born April 4, 1958) is an American basketball coach. He is currently an Associate AD for the University of Mississippi Rebels men's basketball team. From 2016 to 2017, he was an assistant coach of the Windy City Bulls of the NBA Development League. He previously was an associate head coach at North Carolina State University Wolfpack men's basketball team after being an assistant coach there. Alan Major
Alan M. Major (born June 21, 1968) is an American basketball coach who is the head coach of Patriots BBC of the Basketball Africa League (BAL). He was the head coach at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte from 2010 to 2015. Before being named coach of the Charlotte 49ers, Major spent nine years working with Thad Matta at Ohio State and Xavier universities. Born in Indianapolis, Indiana, he is a 1992 graduate of Purdue. Mark Price
William Mark Price (born February 15, 1964) is an American former basketball player and coach. He was most recently the head coach of the Charlotte 49ers. As a player, he played for 12 seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA), from 1986 to 1998. Spending the majority of his career with the Cleveland Cavaliers, his last three years consisted of one season each with the Washington Bullets, Golden State Warriors, and Orlando Magic. College career Standing at 6 feet (183 cm) tall, Price played college basketball at Georgia Tech.
